Problem with Folder Based Multisite

I am not sure if this is a bug or something I am doing wrong.

I have set up a folder based multilingual site at www.whpva.org

When in site admin and I select the other sites, under the security tab you dont get the Main, LDAP, Open ID, and Windows Live tabs - which is what I expected, however the settings contained in those tabs for the main site are not applied to the other sites, ie you cant login using open id and you need an email address to log in even though that is turned off.

Am I missing Something ?

Re: Problem with Folder Based Multisite

Hi Neil,

If you login to the root site (ie the first site) as a user in the Admins role ( only this role works for security settings), you should be able to set those things from the root site by chossing the other sites from the dropdown. It may be blocked from site settings in the folder sites themselves but the root site can set any site setting on child sites.

If you have it configured for related sites mode then of course those settings are inherited from the root site and not allowed to be changed in child sites.

It works for me.

Hope it helps,

Joe

Re: Problem with Folder Based Multisite

Thats what I expected to happen - However changing things in the parent site appear not to be cascading down to the child sites. I deleted one of the child sites and recreated it and that appeared to be more as I expected. I will see if I can narrow down what is happening

Its definately not working as I expected. It appears that sub sites are inheriting the security settings that were in the parent site when the sub sie was created. For example - if you set the parent site so that new registrations are not permitted, and email address is not required to login, then create a new sub site it has the same security settings. If you now change the main site settings so new registrations are allowed and email address is required, the sub site stays as it was before and you have no way to change them without deleting and recreating the site. Also I cant get the RPX based sign on to work on subsites - instead it asks for the open id account details instead.

Re: Problem with Folder Based Multisite

When you create a new site yes it will default to the same settings as the root site so you should look around on the tabs and choose the settigns you want before saving the new site. If you are not using related sites mode you can still change those settings after the site is created. It works for me. You're saying those items aren't visible after site creation or that they don't update?
Are you sure you do not have related sites mode enabled in web.config?

To enable RPX you do have to first create yourself an open id or use an existing one so you can login to the RPX site to create your RPX account.

Hope it helps,

Joe

Re: Problem with Folder Based Multisite

I'm not sure RPX can work in folder sites because its based on the domain/host name which is the same in all folder sites. I would think it should work in folder sites using related sites mode but I have not tested that scenario.

Re: Problem with Folder Based Multisite

I have Related Sites mode enables in config.

If you look at http://www.whpva.org/Default.aspx you will see that there is no option to register and to sign on you need an email address

If you look at http://www.whpva.org/it/default.aspx you will see that there is the option to register and to sign on you can use a user id.

I am using related sites mode as I want a single log on as the multiple sites are for different languages, however as the setting changes appear not to be reflected into the subsites the only way to change anything is to delete the site and recreate it.

If you look at the first example you will see that I have RPX setup ok, the second example appears not to use the settings however and just gives the open id option. RPX appears to work across multiple domains so am not sure why it wouldnt work in a folder based site.

I have Related Sites mode enables in config.

Thats the way it was designed to work. All sites need the same security settings if using related sites mode so after site creation those settigns are hidden and also you should not make them different than the root site. I did not design it allow custom settings in child sites in related sites mode.

There is no point in disabling site registration in the root site since registering in any of the sites is registering in all the sites. You might remove the registration link from the skin in the root site but anyone who registers in any of the sites can sign into the root site or any other site in the installation.

Sorry if that is not what you were looking for but that how related sites mode works.

Best,

Joe

Re: Problem with Folder Based Multisite

Jo

I agree "All sites need the same security settings if using related sites mode" . I am not looking for Custom Setting in a child site.

However - I would expect making a change in the parent site to also make a change in a subsite, you might want to for example turn of registrations for a while and I would want that reflected in all sites. Alternatively in the future a new security option may be introduced that IU want to turn on in the parent site and I would want this to be included in the subsites. At the moment, to make any changes would require you to delete the site and recreate it, this is not practical,

As far as I can see, new related sites simply get a read only copy of the security configuration in place when created rather than using the current main site security settings.

Re: Problem with Folder Based Multisite

The examples I gave with regard email and registration were just to illistrate what is happening and are not an indication of what i am trying to achieve

Re: Problem with Folder Based Multisite

Hi Neil,

I see your points. I will look into improving that so that if changes are made in the parent site they are propagated to all child sites in related sites mode.

I will also look into RPX and see if I can get that working in folder sites with related sites mode.

Best,

Joe
