Huge difference between skin look in Artisteer 3.1 and in mojoPortal based website

I have been using mojoPortal for several websites now. I have always found it a small bit trying to make the skinning work as I intended. But so far I have ended quite close to what I wanted although it took a lot of work and hair scratching. Probably because I have not been doing much work with CSS before I started to use mojoPortal a few years ago.

When I started the latest website I downloaded latest version of mojoPortal (2.3.8.1) I was very happy to learn that the "integration" with Artisteer 3.1 seemed to have reached the point, where I could actually make (most) of the design work in that program. I find it a very helpful tool for designing website skins.

But I was quite surprised when I viewed the result on the new website. The difference was so huge, I am SURE I must have missed something very obvious. I just can't see what.

Starting skin was "artisteer31-alphamotors1.artx".

I made my modifications in Artisteer 3.1 and followed the instructions in the documentation on this website (http://www.mojoportal.com/creating-skins-from-artisteer-html-templates.aspx).

The result on the new website was this: http://www.sdrfelding-brugsforening.dk/

The intended result - a screenshot from Artisteer 3.1 is this: http://www.sdrfelding-brugsforening.dk/artisteer-31-design.aspx

Not quite the same Cry Not even close I would say.

Where do I start to fix this? I have the Artisteer 3.1 file if needed and can send it/upload it/put it on website for download if needed.

Ok - this is weird.

Does some sort of CSS caching happen on a webserver? Even when/after editing web.config?

I have restarted my browser several times when trying to solve this problem. AND refreshed too. And I have no proxy or webpage cache working anywhere - not to my knowledge. It's a hosted solution so I have no access to webserver except through either FTP client or browser.

At least my problem is gone now. The website looks as I intended. I am sorry if I have disturbed anyone here.

Re: Huge difference between skin look in Artisteer 3.1 and in mojoPortal based website

Hi Lars,

CSS is cached both on the server and by the browser. Recycling the app or touching web.config should clear the server cache. Restarting the browser does not clear the browser cache.

The easiest way to make sure CSS changes are applied immediately is to reset the skin guid by clicking a button under Administration > Advanced Tools > Design Tools Cache Tool

as mentioned in the 3rd paragraph on our Overview/Introduction to Skinning.

Hope that helps,

Joe

Hi Joe,

Thank for your answer. Yes - I did some research on this and found a lot information about he caching thing. Both sides.

But now I created the second site on the same installation. I did try all the things you mention. But i still have some weird stuff going on.

The new site show PART of my skin - not all. Even after doing all those thing. And even more weird is, that if I go to the new site (http://www.daglibrugsen-sdrfelding.dk/) have the correct skinning if I look at an example of my new skin from "Site Settings", "Preview/Browse" I get the fully updated new skin.

I have tried to use another browser on my computer too as I have both IE, FireFox, Chrome, Opera and Safari installed. And they all react the same. That should - I believe - indicate that it is the server, that do something that spoil the experience :)

Both of your sites look correct in my browser as far as I can tell.

Yes - now they do. I found the solution - it was sleep!

After my caching problems with first site, which solved itself given time of course, I looked in the wrong place when I got problems with second site. And I must have been too tired, because it was quite obvious. Some files were missing (i.e. older version of my new design) in site 2.

That happened because I changed a few things after making site 1, so I had hand copied files into the main skin folder and into skin folder for site 1. So when I made site 2 I had to copy files again. And missed some *blush*.

Now the main skin folder have the correct version so it won't happen again when I create more sites on this solution. And it will not happen again ever as I will not forget how shameful it is to make such an error.
