Lost with Artisteer created skin

I have received a 2 column design from our designer using Atisteer 3.1 (http://www.davidjwhite.net/dtodd/index.html). Every thread seems to say just match div tags and away you go. My experience isn't even close. I can get the header to match but then after that things fall apart (http://www.davidjwhite.net/dtodd/close.png).

As a baseline I have excellent HTML but moderate CSS skills. I am more of a server developer. I am just looking for a steer not for anyone to solve it for me. Any help would be appreciated

Re: Lost with Artisteer created skin

I would say start with the documentation at: http://www.mojoportal.com/creating-skins-from-artisteer-html-templates.aspx but if you have made it this far you probably already have.

I have only done a couple of skins from an Artisteer template, but a couple of things that jump out at me that may be affecting your skin and may help to fix it.

I believe you need to account for a 3 column design not just 2.

What I do otherwise is do a View Source in the browser on my mojoPortal page with the skin applied and kind of do a line by line comparison to make sure the div structures match what is in the Artisteer html file. This can help you figure out where the discrepancies may reside. Note that some of the Artisteer div markup is rendered by some of the mojoPortal controls (prefixed with portal: i.e. the portal:SiteMenu control) so not all of the Artisteer markup will reside in the layout.master file of your skin.

Like I said, I am kind of new to the skinning, but that is the process I have taken to this point to get skins to format correctly using an Artisteer template.

Hope it helps.

Re: Lost with Artisteer created skin

I believe you need to use Artisteer 3.0. mojoPortal hasn't been updated to work with Artisteer 3.1 yet, as far as I know.

Re: Lost with Artisteer created skin

Hi Joe, I just looked at their site, and Artisteer 3.1 was officially released on November 30. So I think it should be safe to work on mojoPortal integration as your time allows.

Re: Lost with Artisteer created skin

Can mojoPortal CMS sites be styled easily WITHOUT using Artisteer then?

Re: Lost with Artisteer created skin

"Easily" is a matter of opinion. I would say if you have knowledge and experience in website design and css then it is not difficult. You can check out all of the documentation for Design and Skinning and make your decision from that.

Re: Lost with Artisteer created skin

Thanks Kerry - I was looking for some sort of step by step skinning guide using Artisteer I guess, since I am under a time crunch, but the only instructions I can find leave a lot up in the air as to what to do and how to accomplish it.  I downloaded a trial version of Artisteer and tried to do some very simple designing, but I have no idea how to implement this or what files to copy where... I just don't see those instructions anywhere...

Re: Lost with Artisteer created skin

Did you read the Creating skins from Artisteer html templates page? That is the page I used to learn how to do it.

Side note: With the trial version of Artisteer you will get water marks on your export's images, so you would have to purchase Artisteer to not have the watermarks on your final product.

Re: Lost with Artisteer created skin

I can't even figure out where in the application to find what trial version of Artisteer I'm using... it's not like there's an "About", or "Options", or "Help" menu items available...  As I downloaded and installed a file called "Artisteer.3.1.0.48375.exe", I would have to assume that I am now running version 3.1, although the title bar just says "Untitled - Artisteer 3 Standard Edition (Trial)".

I also can't even figure out what template or file I started from now...

Re: Lost with Artisteer created skin

I'm looking for specific instructions that would tell someone what to do with the files after you export them them from Artisteer...

After I modify the design in Artisteer, I export, publish to local/ftp, using template: HTML, then I get a file full of stuff that I have no idea what to do with or where to try to move it in order to see the design I was just working on

Re: Lost with Artisteer created skin

There are detailed instructions in the article Creating mojoPortal Skins from Artisteer HTML templates.

However, I don't think you'll be able to produce a useable skin with a trial version. I'm not even sure if you can export files from a trial version but if you can it will have watermarks on all the images.

I'm pretty sure the version info is under File > About Artisteer

"Untitled" is just the name of the file you're working with, you can name it when you save it, if the trial version allows saving.

Hope that helps,

Joe
