2-3-7-0 Mono version?

Hello all,

sorry if I'm missing something, but on codeplex download page there is no package for mono. Does this mean that latest release does not support mono? There is nothing about it in release note in the blog.

Re: 2-3-7-0 Mono version?

Hi,

To be honest I have not released a Mono package for the last few releases, very few people use it and I have just been too busy to test and produce packages for Mono. If you look at the side of the codeplex download page you can find previous versions and you can try version 2.3.6.6. Historically it has always been a hit or miss situation with Mono and there are always some bugs and some unsupported things. Mono has never really reached a point where it is a stable and reliable environment for large complex ASP.NET applications and lately the Mono team is much more focused on mobile device efforts as far as I can tell.

I haven't given up on Mono entirely and will probably resume making packages for it in the future but I must admit my enthusiasm for it has diminished a bit over time. It has never quite got to a point where I could confidently recommend anyone to run an important production site on Mono and after many years of involvement with Mono my optimism that one day it will get there is in decline. Mono has very many other great uses besides ASP.NET and for very limited scenarios it may work ok for some web sites, but there is a reason you don't see many/any web hosts offering it.

Best,

Joe

Re: 2-3-7-0 Mono version?

I have one more question. I downloaded the 2.3.6.6 binaries. When I use CorFlags.exe it says that binaries are build for .NET 4.0. Is that right? This means that mojoportal will not work on mono version in current debian stable (squeeze).

Re: 2-3-7-0 Mono version?

Did you download one of the packages specifically for Mono? Those packages should be targeting .NET 3.5.

Makes sure you download one of the packages that has "mono" in the name, ie mojoportal-2-3-6-6-sqlite-mono-deploymentfiles.zip or mojoportal-2-3-6-6-pgsql-mono-deploy,mentfiles.zip

Of course whether it works is still likely to be hit or miss as I said before, working with Mono for ASP.NET has always been a "your mileage may vary" kind of thing.
