File Manager feature VS. upload via FTP

Hello all,

The subject says it all.  Since Administrators are the only ones uploading to the site via FTP anyway, why not just use the file manager module?  What governs the use of when to use either one?  Despite the fact I've been on this board for about a year, I still never have understood that.  Thanks so much for any clarification.

Re: File Manager feature VS. upload via FTP

ftp is a different mechanism for uploading files, it isn't really related to site administrators because ftp is not governed by mojoPortal roles, so it is based on the user account for ftp and not at all related to mojoPortal users.

When editing content and adding images, the editor provides a way for users to browse and upload files on the server, it is not usually done by ftp, ftp is mainly for when you are upgrading your installation of mojoPortal or if you find it easier to upload lots of images by ftp some people may do that.

You cannot use the mojoPortal file manager for upgrading but you can use it for uploading files if you want to.

Hope that helps,

Joe

Re: File Manager feature VS. upload via FTP

oops.  I nearly forgot about this thread till I just saw it like two seconds ago.  That will make things a lot easier.  So then I also just realized that that negates the need for a whole separate site for downloads, for I have since realized that it would be silly to do that for just the one thing, since I could easily insert it as another page in the menu of the current site.  But sorry for rambling.  What I wanted to ask was when adding new folders for downloadable content via the file manager, does Mojo Portal really care where the file is placed on the server?  For instance, if I were to potentially add a folder for each user and his or her file contributions (documents, scripts, media based content that we do), is it possible to link to the folder and file to which the subject of the article pertains?  Do the foreign folders have to be placed under a certain hard-coded subfolder?  (images for example)?  Thanks.
