Yahoo Media Player with MP3's stored in Shared Files Module?

Hi guys,

I've got a church website where they want to stream "Last Sunday's Sermon" using, say, the Yahoo Media Player. The issue is that a link taken from a Shared Files module where the MP3's are stored are not "friendly", in that they do not actually contain a filename with a .mp3 extension, so the Yahoo media player (or any other, for that matter) can't detect the links. Yes, I could certainly store these files in a regular old folder on the site, but now we have a pastor who, while a true man of God, is most certainly not a true man of tech, and entrusting him or burdening him with an FTP upload is just plain dangerous.

Any way to get a media player-friendly link out of the Shared Files module such that a media player can detect it on a page?

Thanks in advance!

Duane

Nevermind; figured it out; you use a type hint on the link. Sorry for the novice question.

Re: Yahoo Media Player with MP3's stored in Shared Files Module?

Hi Duane,

If that works for you I guess its ok, but really Shared Files is not intended for files used in content of other features.

User could use the regular file manager to upload files or they can upload them from the wysiwyg editor, ie if you want to link to a file in content you can use the link browser to browse server files and upload them. That is the recommended way for files that are to be used in content.

Shared Files is for sharing files based on roles, so the files are protected unless the user is in a role to view the page and/or feature instance. Even if the user knows the url to download the file they can't download it unless they are in an allowed view role. So if the Shared Files module is protected by roles then any links you use will not work unless the user is in a role that is allowed.

Hope that helps,

Joe

Re: Yahoo Media Player with MP3's stored in Shared Files Module?

Hi Joe!

Yeah, understand about the role-based nature of the Shared Files module, but in this case, we don't restrict it because the pastor wants all and sundry to be able to listen to or download his sermons. As such, no one need be logged in to access them. Anyway, I've just got the pastor to the point where he can handle uploading to Shared Files, and judging by all our other interactions during this process, pushing my luck with the file manager is just a bad idea... cheeky

Thank you again for the reply, Joe! Always appreciated!

Duane
