Having a mailing list

What is the best way to have a mailing list with MojoPortal?

The newsletter thing doesn't appear to be what I need because it appears to require registration with the site as a user.  I just want people to be able to enter their email and select a few mailing list to get emails from.

With the option to unsubscribe and such at will.

Re: Having a mailing list

Hi,

The mojoPortal Newsletter feature does NOT require that users be registered on the site, though if a user is registered they can manage their subscriptions from the user profile.

To make it possible for non members to sign up you can add an instance of the "Newsletter Sign Up" feature to a page, like what you see on the home page of this site. It can show multiple newsletters if you have more than one newsletter defined.

Hope it helps,

Joe

Re: Having a mailing list

Thanks Joe, I'll take a look at it.

Quick follow up, so lets say johndoe@example.com subscribes to the list, can they unsubscribe without being registered?

Re: Having a mailing list

yes, they can still unsubscribe. it would be against the CANSPAM laws not to be able to.

each newsletter must have a link that the user can click to opt out. This link is generated from a token that is required to be in the email body before you are able to mail the newsletter.

Best,

Joe

Re: Having a mailing list

Is there a way to disable the confirmation email?  Or activate emails without the link?  Finally, is there a way to resend the verification email?

Good additions for all three if not already in teh system.

Re: Having a mailing list

I've added a wish list item to our project tracker for a way to resend the confirmation.

I do not think it is a good idea to disable the requirement that emails are verified. If the user is a site member and is already validated then it is not needed and will not be sent, but in any other case if we are allowing anonymous users to subscribe then they should be verified otherwise bots may come along and subscribe a bunch of email addresses that do not belong to them and once you get a few people reporting you for spam it is very difficult to undo the damage and the sender email and ip address will get added to all kinds of spammer black lists and then your messages will land in the spam box for most people. Protecting the reputation of your email sending account is very important in order to have success with a newsletter. So I don't think I should build it in a way that invites you to do it wrong. For those who want to do it anyway you can update it in the database to verified in the mp_LetterSubscribe table.

Best,

Joe

Re: Having a mailing list

While I understand your concern, I would think that adding it as an option is a good idea anyways.  Just makes MojoPortal that much more useful.  Ultimately you are not responsible for them ignoring your advise.  And my list will be so managable that a few reports of spam will not hurt.
