Mitchinson - Golden / Drop down menu items?

Hi,

I have installed mojoportal on my site and love its abilities and ease of use.

I do have a question regarding the Skins and their Menu systems.

I have been using the Mitchinson - Golden during the setup of the site and just noticed that there are no child (drop down) menu items off the main menu.  I believe that this will be detrimental to the navigation of the site for the user.

Is there a method to turn ON the drop down feature for this main menu & skin?

Thanks

Phill

Re: Mitchinson - Golden / Drop down menu items?

That skin has a vertical sub menu, if you create child pages below the top level pages they will appear in the vertical sub menu. The main menu only shows top level pages in that skin, it does not have any flyout sub menu.

Hope it helps,

Joe

Re: Mitchinson - Golden / Drop down menu items?

Hi Joe,

Thanks, I was afraid that would be the case.

I did find that the pages would show the child pages in a column.

I kind of like the idea that the user can see which page he/she wants and can go to it directly from the Home page.

I know its a stretch for you... but...

I am building a site for a sailing group... would you have any suggestions to skins that are sort of nautical in theme or color and have the drop-down main menu?

Thanks

Phill

Re: Mitchinson - Golden / Drop down menu items?

Hi Phil,

We don't have any that seem nautical to me but there are a number of skins with flyout menus, mitchinson-earthy, mitchinson-erthy-alt1, jquery-ui, and a number of the Artisteer skins have that kind of menu.

Really you could design your own skin using Artisteer, it is a really user friendly product and it has a free trial so you can give it a try before deciding if you like it, but I bet you could come up with something nautical.

Best,

Joe

I was going to recommend Artisteer as well. It's great when you already have something brewing in the back of your mind.

Re: Mitchinson - Golden / Drop down menu items?

Hi Joe, Jamie,

Thanks for the thoughts and suggestion.  I looked at some skins from MetaMorph but couldn't get any to work.  They just scrambled the screen and contents up.

I have downloaded and installed the Artisteer skin builder and I agree they make it very easy... once you get past the myriad of bits and pieces and choices...

Thanks

Re: Mitchinson - Golden / Drop down menu items?

Hi guys,

I have just been looking at the Artisteer app and its a daunting task that they make much easier.

A couple of Q's if I can?

  1. Which version Standard or Home?
  2. Which of the following is best for creating skins for MojoPortal?
    Blog on Blogger.dom
    Joomla
    WordPress
    Drupal
    DotNetNuke
    HTML
    asp.net
    Code Charge studio...

Thanks

Re: Mitchinson - Golden / Drop down menu items?

Hi Phil,

Thanks for the beer! Much appreciated.

I would go with Standard, it is the full product with all the textures and backgrounds etc.

As far as export, you  want to export as HTML and then follow the steps in this document to make a mojoPortal skin.

http://www.mojoportal.com/creating-skins-from-artisteer-html-templates.aspx

If you have troubles with the conversion we'll try to help. It is actually going to be even a little easier after Artisteer ships version 3.0 and we ship the next version of mojoPortal and both are coming soon. Artisteer 3.0 will be a free upgrade to anyone who bought it in the last year.

Best,

Joe

Re: Mitchinson - Golden / Drop down menu items?

Hi Joe,

I am surprised at how different each of the "types" (HTML/ASP.NET/etc) changes the entire layout and looks textures etc.

Thanks for the hits & tips.  I'll work in it tonight and tomorrow morning... then comes the next step... export and then apply to the actual mojoportal site.  I hope the docs you pointed me to will help.

Enjoy your beer... :-)

Re: Mitchinson - Golden / Drop down menu items?

Joe,

I got on okay with it... Created a nice looking skin and exported it BUT when I put it in a folder under the Data structure and select it from the drop down ... it is garbage

Sorry I was also unable to follow your instructions... I don't have a layout.master file or style-artisteer-overrides.css and have no idea where to look for them.

Re: Mitchinson - Golden / Drop down menu items?

Hi Joe,

I got some of this figured out... when creating a new skin the destination folder (\data\sites\1\skins\...) MUST already containing a copy of an existing sites files....

I see that the new artisteer skin has "TRIAL" written all over it.... not a very good thing?  Its written on every image file as a watermark...

I do not think I can use this product without purchasing it.

Got any thoughts or suggestions?

Re: Mitchinson - Golden / Drop down menu items?

Hi Phil,

Yes you would have to purchase it to be able to export the design without watermarks, the idea of the trial is to decide if you like it as a design tool before you buy it, but they don't let you use the designs without purchasing it. To me its like buying a thousand designs for $129 and is well worth the price of the tool.

To create a mojoPortal skin from the export you do have to start with one of our existing Artisteer skins as described in the documentation, we have several different ones and you need to choose one with a similar menu location/structure so we indicate in the document the specific one to use based on your design. You should also make sure your design in Artisteer has a 3 column layout so the exported CSS will have all the needed elements for 3 columns.

Re: Mitchinson - Golden / Drop down menu items?

Joe,

Not sure what is happening but I notice that when the page is displayed from the web site it doe NOT have any of the payout I defined in the artisteer tool!

i.e. the menu is different, the page columns are different, the page colors are different... etc etc

If they created this tool for this job then there is something I am missing???

Re: Mitchinson - Golden / Drop down menu items?

When you say the page are you talking about a mojoPortal page or the html page exported from the tool?

Artisteer is not designed to work with mojoPortal, mojoPortal is designed to make it relatively easy to create a mojoPortal skin from an Artisteer Html export.

I would think I could export it from my licensed copy without any watermarks if you send me the .artx file. I'd be willing to convert it to a mojoPortal skin for $50 and I imagine others here might be willing to undercut me and do it for less and that's fine with me too because I have a lot of other work to do. So if anyone else wants to bid on it feel free.

Best,

Joe

Re: Mitchinson - Golden / Drop down menu items?

Joe,

First let me thank you for taking the time to deal with a frustrated person... thanks

I was referring to is the page I see in mojoportal.  It is missing all the layout functionality (i.e. I had 3 columns in artisteer but after exporting and viewing it in mojoportal... no columns at all)!  View page.html in IE and its all there!

I do understand that this is the demo version but for someone who is only going to make 1 or maybe 2 skins $125. is a bit pricey... especially when I the site I am building is a freebie too!  It is a great tool though for those who want to make skins and sell there work its great.

Guess I am back to searching for a pre-built skin that comes close to my needs.

Thanks

Phill

Joe,

Thanks for the offer to convert the artx file but the demo doesn't create one...

Re: Mitchinson - Golden / Drop down menu items?

Joe,

I have decided that I do need the Artisteer tool but I want to make sure you guys get the credit and your %.  Where do I find a link to go to Artisteers from here?

By the way when I questioned artisteer support they made a big deal out of NOT supporting mojoportal.  I told them that they should change their mind as you are going out of your way to make their skins work on mojoportal.

Thanks

Hi Phill, you can either click the big Artisteer ad at the top of the page, or the link to the left in my signature. Thanks for supporting mojoPortal!

We just need to keep spreading the word about mojoPortal. Once it grows big enough, Artisteer will have to add in direct support for us. :)
