Exclude search indexing of hidden feature instances?

Hey everyone, I'm not sure of the best place to post this, but it seems to be administration related. We have some content on our site that will be in place to be used "just in case", and left hidden. For instance, we want to have a blog instance prepared and ready to go to provide disaster-related news and instructions. This blog instance will be hidden from both anonymous and authenticated users during "normal" operations, and made visible just in case of disaster.

We've noticed that the site search index seems to be including these hidden features, so for instance entries on this "disaster" blog shows up in search results and can be navigated to.

I know that the hidden feature functionality is not intended for security, but is there any way to keep them out of the site search, just to cut down on confusion? If not, maybe this is really a feature request to add an "exclude from search" checkbox in the general settings tab for all features?

Thanks,

Jamie

You can use this key in the web config SearchableFeatureGuidsToExclude and put in the value the id of the feature that you want to exclude

Re: Exclude search indexing of hidden feature instances?

Thanks for the reply. I did read about that, but from the way it's described, I believe that will just remove "Blogs" from the list of searchable features that appear in a drop-down list on the search page. I'm not sure if it affects indexing of the feature or not. In any case, we have other blogs that we want to be available to search, so even if this key prevents all blogs from being searched, this won't work for our requirements.

Thanks,

Jamie

Re: Exclude search indexing of hidden feature instances?

Hi Jamie,

you could set the view permissions on the page that contains the blog to a role rather than just hiding it. Search results are filtered by role so that would keep it from showing up in search for public users. To enable it when you need it you would just change the view roles to All Users.

I will add a wish list item in our project tracker to be able to disable search indexing on specific instances but not sure how soon I will get to it, I don't think it will be trivial to implement it.

Best,

Joe

Re: Exclude search indexing of hidden feature instances?

Thanks, Joe, I thought of that one too. Unfortunately our disaster information blog really needs to be on the home page for maximum visibility. We'll find a way to work around it until you can figure out a good solution.

Re: Exclude search indexing of hidden feature instances?

Hi Jamie,

In that case then set the view permissions on the blog itself instead of the page from the security tab in blog settings. You will still need the Hide from authenticated setting though otherwise admins will always see the blog. But setting the view permissions of the blog to a role will keep i tout of search results for users not in the role.

Best,

Joe
