Filemanager only available to Admins

Joe,

since that you changed access to Filemanager only to admins you have improved security.

On the other hand, if you want to allow content managers (-contributors, ...) to upload files, e.g. a PDF which in turn gets referenced by a link to a webpage that is now only possible if he also has admin rights.
But if you have a tight granular access policy, it won't be possible anymore, which means you have to open the site even more than it was before.

I also tried to use the shared files module, but that one is not usable if you want to make linked references to a webpage.

So, it would be very helpful to have kind of a stripped down user available filemanager, which can be configured to which directory structure access is allowed and by whom.

Can you help?

Thank you very much

Juerg

Re: Filemanager only available to Admins

Hi Juerg,

File Manager is not limited to admins, you can configure roles allowed to upload files

Administration > Site Settings > Security > Permissions

Hope it helps,

Joe

Re: Filemanager only available to Admins

The question is where do they upload the files? I want forum users to be able to see a file manager below a certain folder under a site (say "forumfiles" - and possibly be able to make subfolders there or at least use premade subfolders for content organizing) and not be able to navigate upwards

Is this possible?

Re: Filemanager only available to Admins

btw at a forum post can't there be an easy way to attach a file (as in phpBB) to the post without seeing any file manager etc. (and for images/videos etc. could have option to also show pic preview or even live thumb for video at the end of the post)

Re: Filemanager only available to Admins

Hi George,

Yes, our forums are very limited compared to stand alone forums out there.

You can allow user to upload images by adding them to roles allowed under Administration > Site Settings > Security > Permissions > Roles That Can Upload Files but only in a user specific location. This will allow them to upload images in the editor in the forums. If  the user is also in Roles That Can Delete Files in the Editor then they also can use the File Manager, but again constrained to a specific folder and with limited file extensions allowed.

File attachments are not currently supported.

Hope it helps,

Joe

Re: Filemanager only available to Admins

Hi,

I have tried this and it is not working. Is there a webconfig setting or something else that works in conjunction with this to make it work?

Using the instructions to Administration > Site Settings > Security > Permissions > Roles That Can Upload Files I added a custom role to the Roles That Can Upload Files. But people in that role do not have File Manager available when they login. I tried to access the page directly and recieved an Access denied message.

As I test I temporarily added the user to the Administrators group and when she logged in File Manager was available. So I tried adding one of the built in roles to the Roles That Can Upload Files and then added the user to this role. Still File Manager was not available.

Any help appreciated.

Cheers,
Leah

Re: Filemanager only available to Admins

Hi Leah,

It is a little confusing but it does work as intended.

Users in roles that can upload files can upload files in the editor while editing content, such as through the image dialog or the link dialog which allows browsing the server and uploading files.

In order to have access to the File Manager a user must also be in Roles Allowed to Delete Files in the Editor because the File Manager also allows deleting files.

You can get some extra protection by adding users to Roles that can upload and browse but only in a user specific folder instead of adding them to Roles that Can Browse and Upload, because then at least they are limited to only being able to delete files they uploaded themselves.

Hope it helps,

Joe
