Created page wrong adresses (e.g. was newpage then somepage, but still points to newpage)

Hi there!

I got an issue. It seems appeared on multisite hosting, but I'm not sure. When we created the page firstly it has newpage.aspx address (for example) then after we set it up it take sompage.aspx address. But when we choose View page link to edit modules and content on this page it redirects to newpage.aspx still, and system say that there is no page with such name.

Re: Created page wrong adresses (e.g. was newpage then somepage, but still points to newpage)

Hi,

You need to understand that when you create a new page, after you enter the name of the page, when you tab out of the textbox for name, it runs a javascript to call a web service to suggest an url based on the name. You should wait until you see the url before you save the page.

When the page is saved a friendly url is created for the page. If you later rename the page it generates a new friendly url and it creates a 301 redirect from the old url to the new url. If things don't end up as you intended you should look around under Administration > Advanced Tools > Url Manager to see if the friendly urls are as you would like them, and under Administration > Advanced Tools > 301 Redirect Manager to see if there are unintended redirects that need to be deleted.

Hope it helps,

Joe

Thank you very much, Joe! At some point I start think that I'm going crazy. %)

Now all is clear and controllable. :)

Re: Created page wrong adresses (e.g. was newpage then somepage, but still points to newpage)

I'm having similar issues.  I created a page, changed its name and it still points to the place of a previous page with the same name which was deleted.  When I navigate to the new page I get "XML Parsing Error: no element found" and the Url is still the old one.  Tried delete and recreate, tried the 301 tools that you suggest here and I get the same results. I kind of got it to work by changing the Url to something totally different in the page settings section and it works but no matter which way I go the results for the old page are the same, seems to be stuck someplace and I haven't been able to find it in the data.  Any other ideas?

See the new article Renaming Pages and Changing Urls which explains how it works and why in more detail.

Hope that helps,

Joe
