SEO Keywords Text Field Limitation

SEO Keywords Text Field Limitation

Hi Joe

Is there a character limitation on the meta keywords box in PageSettings?

We're running a very big SEO campaign for one of our mojoPortal sites, needing to put 20 keywords (broad and long tail variations) into the homepage keywords meta tag. I know Google doesn't value these but currently Bing and Yahoo still do.

We can only get 255 characters (inc. spaces) in the box which indicates the field is restricted. Its important that we can enter these keyphrases in to the meta tag so is there any way to change this limit in a config file?

This is an issue we'll face frequently as really, SEO is our main service and mojo has become our main CMS to facilitate it.

Hi Mark,

Currently the field in the database is nvarchar(255), so that is all that is going to fit.

I will put it on my list to see about increasing the size of that field but it is not a high priority.

As far as I know meta keywords are dead, and not used by google, yahoo or Bing. You are far better off using the keywords in real content instead of in the meta. I think stuffing a lot of keywords into meta especially if they are not related to actual content on the page can hurt SEO and the reputation of your site. 

Nevertheless, when I get a chance I will see about enlarging that field.

We've highly optimised the rest of the site anyway with quality content and everything else we do. I agree with you on the stuffing absolutely.  I'll let you know the progress on this actually as it could be a good SEO testimonial for mojo - we've had fantastic results for non mojo clients with position 1 rankings for 930,000 searches per month terms.

When we achieve similar results through mojo it'll really show how good it is when facilitating SEO.
