Please remove Google Translation

Hi Joe, this is not a request for a feature, but to change your site www.mojoportal.com.

Can you please remove the google translation bar on top of the pages. smiley

It is very annoying, it keeps coming up on every page, but after a second or so after the page is loaded and this pushes the rest of the page down about a centimeter. This timing is so stupid that very often when i have decided to click on something, the page moves and I end up clicking on something else instead. Happens all the time!

Also, it makes your site look worse since the background becomes unaligned with the center portion of the site.

Besides that it is of very low value I think. I guess that very very few of your visitors are in need of this translation service, and those who are can probably invoke a translator by themselves. If you _must_ have this feature, i suggest that you place it on the side. Look at http://i7media.net Excellent implementation!

Just my 2c.
Anyone agrees?

However, I have long wanted to say about it. Using an Google Translation on the site was a bad idea.

Re: Please remove Google Translation

Hello Alexander,

Please forgive me if I sound ignorant but English is the only language I know and there are times when I go to websites that appear to have information I need but they don't have an English translation of their site avaialable. I know I can just go to Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, etc.. and type in the URL for the site and have it translated for me but it would be very nice if the site had a translator service avaialable so I don't have to go through the extra steps of translating.

I understand that services like Google Translate aren't the best types of translators as they are too literal but they do serve a good purpose. Of course, no one should expect the translations to be 100% accurate and I highly doubt many people have this expectation.

Mats,

I think the issue you are having is related to your browser. Can you share which browser you use so Joe A. can best set the CSS of this site to work well with it? I am using IE8 and FF3.6 and I am not seeing the problems you are describing.

Thanks,
Joe D.

Re: Please remove Google Translation

Hi Mats,

I visit this site every day and I have not experienced the issue you describe. The google translate toolbar is not always there, if I click show original or click the close button (top right of toolbar) it goes away and does not come back. So it seems strange if it is always coming back to the top of the page for you. If you have something like google toolbar installed in your browser that might change the behavior, it wouldn't surprise me if their toolbar detects the google translate script in the page and does something different, but the normal browser based one has a close button and it goes away and does not come back unless you enable it again by translating as far as I know.

Re: Please remove Google Translation

I use mostly IE8, but also Firefox 3.6.

I do not have Google Toolbar installed and the behaviour is exaktly the same on 4 different computers and with different user logged on. If I click the X at the right, the toolbar disappears, but if I reload the page or go to another one it reappears again, but as I said after about half a second to a second after the page has loaded. Exactly the same bahaviour if I click the button "Inaktivera översättning av engelska" (= "Inactivate Translation of English" :-) ).

Now I tried the same with Firefox. Clicking on the disable button makes the toolbar go away permanently it seems. Also after closing the browser and reopening it. However, in the status bar there is a message saying "Fetching data from translate.googleapis.com" a looong time.

Cannot make it go away with IE8 though. I do not have any special configuration at all. Well it irritates me and now I have said so.

The POSITIVE side of this ist that when I was going to click the tab "Community", i instead clicked the link Site Office, which i probably hadn't found otherwise laugh.

What is Site Office?
It looks lika a cool feature that is not quite ready. Is it a long ago started project that now is postponed infinitely or what?

Re: Please remove Google Translation

Found something after some testing.

I changed my language in IE to English(USA) instead of Swedish and now the translation toolbar stays gone.

I think that the reason some of you (and also Joe of course) do not think of it as a problem is that you most certainly have your language set to English(US), but change to another language in internet Explorer (Tools->internet options->Language button at the bottom) and visit the site for a while and i can almost guarantee that you agree with me that it is extremely irritating.

(It is not a solution for me to switch to English permanently because there are a lot of other reasons to have my local native language setting in IE).

Re: Please remove Google Translation

I just figured it out, it seems if I change my browser language preference to something other than English then the google translate gets much more aggressive and won't go away. Maybe it knows the site is in English and is too pushy to help users with something other than English as their browser language preference.

I bet Joe has not noticed this just as I had not noticed it because most users in the US including Joe have their browser set to English?

Re: Please remove Google Translation

Hi All,

Thanks for letting me know about this, I had no idea google translate was being so obnoxious or behaving differently based on browser language preference.

I have removed it since I have not really had any positive feedback about it. If anyone has found it useful they can always just add the google translate link to the browser's link toolbar and then you can translate any site without the site having the google translate script.

Best,

Joe
