Site pages loading, IISReset fixes problem, why?

At random times, mojoPortal content pages will just sit there and not load. Resetting IIS appears to fix this problem. Since we've made some page changes, I'm hesitant to upgrade if the new version doesn't fix this problem. I didn't see the fix in any release notes, so any assistance would be appreciated :)

You can see the site at http://www.nowthinknow.com

Configuration:

mojoPortal Version: 2.3.1.0 MSSQL

Server: IIS 6.0, Server 2003 R2 64-bit, SQL 2008 w/latest service pack, 4 GB RAM

Re: Site pages loading, IISReset fixes problem, why?

This is not a known issue in any version of mojoPortal and has not been reported by anyone else as far as I know.

I suggest you check both the  mojoPortal logs at Administration > System Log and also check Event Viewer on your server for clues. I would especially look for events around the times when you see the page hanging. Note that even though you have 4 GB of RAM, its still possible that IIS is configured to recycle the app pool when a much lower amount of memory is used. Also be aware that if there are other apps on the same machine, especially if they use the same app pool, the other app(s) could be a factor in the issue.

If you identify an error message or something concrete perhaps we can help.

btw, your skin looks great! Mind if I list your site on the mojo Sites page?

Best,

Joe

Re: Site pages loading, IISReset fixes problem, why?

btw, this site and demo.mojoportal.com are running on a similar server but with only 1GB of RAM. Its also running MySql in addition to MS SQL.

One thing I can tell you is that a few days ago after a Windows update I was getting some really strange error that hung my sites, I recycled the app pool, it solved it but the problem came back a little while later, I rebooted and its been fine since then.

Hope it helps,

Joe

Re: Site pages loading, IISReset fixes problem, why?

Joe,

You're definitely allowed to show the site in your gallery! We've been very happy with the mojoPortal platform.

I'll try rebooting the server... haven't done that in a while. I don't recall seeing any error messages, so I'll just have to wait for the issue to come back (joy).

Thanks again!

Best,

-Auri

Re: Site pages loading, IISReset fixes problem, why?

Hi Auri,

There will almost certainly be errors in the mojo log and the Event Viewer > Application log on the machine but most errors are handled and logged and don't cause any big problems. Lots of scripts out there purposely poking at sites to cause errors.

The strange error I got after the recent windows update was way down in the runtime not in mojoPortal code, a fragment from my og is:

System.TypeInitializationException: The type initializer for 'System.Drawing.ToolboxBitmapAttribute' threw an exception. ---> System.Runtime.InteropServices.ExternalException: GDI+ is not properly initialized (internal GDI+ error).
   at System.Drawing.Bitmap..ctor(Stream stream)
   at System.Drawing.ToolboxBitmapAttribute..cctor()
--- End of inner exception stack trace ---
at System.Reflection.CustomAttribute._CreateCaObject(Void* pModule, Void* pCtor, Byte** ppBlob, Byte* pEndBlob, Int32* pcNamedArgs)
at System.Reflection.CustomAttribute.CreateCaObject(Module module, RuntimeMethodHandle ctor, IntPtr& blob, IntPtr blobEnd, Int32& namedArgs)

System.TypeInitializationException: The type initializer for 'System.Drawing.ToolboxBitmapAttribute' threw an exception. ---> System.Runtime.InteropServices.ExternalException: GDI+ is not properly initialized (internal GDI+ error).   at System.Drawing.Bitmap..ctor(Stream stream)   at System.Drawing.ToolboxBitmapAttribute..cctor()   --- End of inner exception stack trace ---   at System.Reflection.CustomAttribute._CreateCaObject(Void* pModule, Void* pCtor, Byte** ppBlob, Byte* pEndBlob, Int32* pcNamedArgs)   at System.Reflection.CustomAttribute.CreateCaObject(Module module, RuntimeMethodHandle ctor, IntPtr& blob, IntPtr blobEnd, Int32& namedArgs)

googleing it led me to this post

http://www.west-wind.com/Weblog/posts/3381.aspx

which led me to this post:

http://blogs.msdn.com/vijaysk/archive/2008/09/02/using-themes-in-asp-net-loads-system-drawing-namespace.aspx

which sounds like a problem that was previously patched by Microsoft but perhaps was patched again recently.

I had never seen this error before and knock on wood have not seen it again since rebooting.

I've added your site to the list, thanks!

Best,

Joe
