Feed Manager - Images not showing

Hello,

I have setup the Feed Manager content on my home page and it is pulling feeds fine, however, it is not displaying any images from the feeds.  It shows the placeholder for the image but not the image itself.  I have enabled the option to display external images in the feed manager but still no luck.  Any ideas how I fix this?

Thanks.

Re: Feed Manager - Images not showing

Hi David,

If you click the gear icon next to the title of the Feed Manager instance, it will take you to the feature instance settings. There is a setting there whether to allow external images and it is false by default. There is potential for cross site scripting attacks when allowing images from other domains so we err on the side of caution by default. I usually enable this myself because I only aggregate feeds that I have some trust of but there is always some risk when you allow this.

Best,

Joe

Re: Feed Manager - Images not showing

I have enabled this option but it still does not show the images.  I have also deleted the feed and added back in again but still no joy.  Any other ideas?

Thanks.

Re: Feed Manager - Images not showing

If you have "Use Excerpt" set to true then it will remove all markup including images and produce a plain text excerpt. It must do this otherwise there is a risk of missing a closing tag and having malformed xhtml. So to show images you must show the full entry of each post.

I'm using it on the Community Blog page where I have the Dilbert feed and it shows the images.

Hope it helps,

Joe

Re: Feed Manager - Images not showing

New posts are displaying images but the old ones aren't even if I delete the feed clear the cache and it back in again but that isn't a problem, it's a brand new site.  I'll just make sure I keep the option enabled.

Thanks again.

Re: Feed Manager - Images not showing

Hi... Greetings!

This err looks like a persistent problem with the module. Was this issue ever fixed?

I'm having the same issue with the rss feed not generating the excerpts for the feed manager to digest. The full rss entry works but not the excerpts. I've tried recreating, check and uncheck options, restarted iis, app pool, clear cache, restarted workstation, checked logs, etc.Nothing! Please help with any suggestion you may have.

Thanks a million,
Joem

Re: Feed Manager - Images not showing

Hi,

The Feed Manager cannot create an excerpt from external content without removing the markup so if you use Feed Manger to create the excerpt it will not work with images.

However, if you are using Feed Manager only for consuming the rss from the internal blog feature, then there is something you can do because you can create the excerpt in the blog and then show full posts in feed manager since the full post from the blog is now an excerpt.

In the blog, if you enable excerpt on the feed in blog settings, then a new tab appears in the blog editor where you can manually create the excerpt exactly as you want it. This way your excerpt can have images and the feed manager will just use the blog excerpts as full posts, ie turn off excerpts in feed manager.

However, note also that in the blog you must create the excerpt, if you don't create it then the blog will autogenerate an excerpt but its limited in the same way as the feed manager. We don't have a good way to cut the html in half or to a specific length automatically with any sure way to not have missing closing tags or extra opening tags that could cause the page rendering to break, so any of our autogenerated excerpts are plain text only at the moment.

Hope that helps,

Joe

Re: Feed Manager - Images not showing

Thanks for the quick reply Joe. Sorry for the mix-up with the functions of each module. I had to step out to get lunch, thought about the two modules and the problem. Fresh air helps...

And then it hit me! Came back in with a perspective and found your reply to be in the same line of what was the underlying problem. "Tanks Ha!"

Before the Forum visit, all my blog post content was fairly short. So I found two things, the length of all the full body post needs to be a certain length > 250 char (the lenght of the excerpt) in order to generate the excerpt. And also, yes... uncheck the feed manager option to "Use Excerpt". This is exactly the problem.

Aloha!
Joem
