VistaDB support?

Hi there. I know the question has been answered in another post before, but since it was 9 months ago perhaps you have reconsidered...

There are some CMS's that support VistaDB (Grafitti-CMS and Umbraco). I think this would be a very good idea for Mojoportal too.

At least Grafitti-CMS is very easy to install, maintain and backup because of this, and have an instant appeal as Sql Server costs a lot of money, MySql sometimes is free with a hosting plan and sometimes not plus both adds a level of complexity för ordinary people (that is non-developers). I'm sure it would boost the popularity of Mojoportal if it's advertised correctly. Like Grafitti-CMS that has it's ContentMadeSimple-concept.

The added benefit is that it works in medium trust without problems, something I'm not quite sure is the case with SQLite.

Grafiti-CMS works great in medium trust, and Umbraco has in it's road map to do the same in 2009.

VistaDB is free for non profit sites if I remember right, and quite affordable for other purposes.

I guess I could make a provider myself, but as I have no experience what so ever it would make it practically impossible due to the time aspect.

For someone experienced it would be a lot easier.

I understand your work load and the added complexity, but really think it would be a wise move.

Best regards

Re: VistaDB support?

Hi,

Thanks for your input. I agree support for VistaDb would be a good thing and I may get to it at some point but not until after I'm actually making a living. Right now I'm living on savings and focusing on producing a few more add on products to sell in order to make a living and focusing on things which I think will most dramatically improve the popularity of mojoPortal.  While I do agree support for VistaDb has potential to improve the popularity of mojoPortal, I think there are other things that will improve the popularity much more rapdily like really getting the e-commerce system in shape and a few other items on my road map like general purpose content versioning system and content tagging and comment systems that can be used from within any mojoportal feature. Once I complete the current road map items and once I have enough revenue coming in from the store to give me more freedom about what to work on I will consider adding VistaDb support.

Best,

Joe

Re: VistaDB support?

Joe,

I've was thinking of adding support for VistaDB Express 3.4 when it was announced last week.  I've developed a number of programs with VistaDB.

I'll need to look into the licensing a bit more since I own a VistaDB Source Edition license and I'm not sure if I can develop with both editions on the same machine.  If a separate development environment is needed then it may take me a little bit more time to get started.  My time this week is limited as I have a pretty full work load.

Re: VistaDB support?

 Hey Todd,

That would be great if you have time/interest in trying to get a VistaDb data layer going! In theory since they closely suport the same syntax as MS SQL it may be a matter of copying the MS SQL data layer and doing a find and replace to switch to the ado.net components for VistaDB.

If you do give it a try, just let me know anything I can do to help or be supportive. Once an intial version is implemented I can keep it maintained and could create some Codesmith templates for it like I have for all the other db layers.

Best,

Joe
