On a number of Modules in the Feature Instance Settings you can specify an icon. I must be missing something obvious - but when are where is that icon shown?

The only place those icons are shown is in the MyPage/WebParts feature, when you personalize pages in MyPage, you choose content from the catalog, and the icon appears in the catalog for content that is set to be enabled for MyPage.
