google map problem

I am trying to enter the following address into a google map.

Palmer Park, Wokingham Road, Reading, Berkshire, RG6 1LF

but it is unable to find it. However if I search forthe same string using google map its works fine - are you aware of anything that mojo is doing different or is a difference in the google api ?

Re: google map problem

I think when you use google maps directly its more like a search, it finds the closest thing it can if there is no exact match and shows the result but when using the api it must be a real match.

The result that is found when using google directly actually has this location:

Earley, Reading, Berkshire RG6, UK

When I enter that in the demo.mojoportal.com site it works.

whereas when I put the location in as you did, it does not.

Hope it helps,

Joe

Re: google map problem

In that case how difficult would it be use two location fields for the google Maps feature. One that is displayed, and an other that is actually used for Google? It would certainly give more flexibility.

Re: google map problem

You can use the Caption to display the address as you'd like it to be listed if its different than the google location. If you leave caption blank it uses location for caption but if you put in a caption it will display that.

Hope it helps,

Joe

Re: google map problem

Sorry - I should have been clearer - i was actually think more for event calendar pro. Its important in the "where" to put a meaningful location, which may not be the same as you need in google to bring up the correct map

Re: google map problem

Other than the main description there is currently no place else to put it, but I will consider adding a location alias field in a future version to make this possible. Maybe there is a way to submit your location so it does return an exact match in google maps, not sure but might be worth looking into.

Best,

Joe

Re: google map problem

I cant find a way round it other than to use an alias. That would be the most usable way to do it as it would allow you to enter a much more meaningful address whilst using a grid reference to actually locate the map. Otherwise its usefulness is limited to street addresses that google understands.

Re: google map problem

Have a look at this page, I think you can submit your location to google so it does work as you wish. Right now its finding an approximate match but if you submit your location then it should be able to be an exact match using the address as you specify it. You may even want to look into taking a picture of your building and submitting it to google street view.

I will add the alias but I can't say for sure how soon I will do it.

Best,

Joe

Re: google map problem

Unfortunately - the locations I need are race tracks, cycle tracks and sports centres rather than normal businesses - But I will see if it will let me submit them.

Re: google map problem

That may be a barrier for submitting it using that page since it is for submitting your own business, but I know they are encouraging public contribution for their street view feature in google maps, so if you take pictures and submit them with locations I think they will accept them, especially if the pictures were tagged with longitude and latitude (iphone can do that for example I think). Another option to think about anyway. I'll get the alias added as soon as I can but I've gt a lot of irons in the fire so difficult to say how soon. Definitely within the next few months but I will shoot for sooner.

Best,

Joe

Re: google map problem

Yeah - You actually have to be at the business location to get it validated - they send you a postcard to the address or call you at the phone no to validate the location.

Re: google map problem

Looks like street view doesn't launch till spring in the UK, so now I feel even more pressure to get that alias implemented for you.

Best,

Joe
