DNS help - Sub Domain install

Calling all DNS experts for help setting up Mojo using sub-domains.

I would like to know the best way to set up my DNS for using sub domains i.e. multiple sites using sub domains.

Right now, anything I type into my browser as a sub domain (anysubdomain.mydomain.com) displays mydomain.com contetn - this must be some sort of wildcard setting by my host, discountasp.net.  I'm not sure about this - anysubdomain.mydomain.com is still in the browser address bar, but mydomain.com is displayed.  This seems to be the behavior I want to use multiple sites with Mojo.

I added a CNAME record for a sub domain (mynewsubdomain.mydomain.com) and have it pointing to mydomain.com.

I'm wondering if this is the best way configure my DNS.  If any subdomain is going to mydomain, it setting up a CNAME redundant?

I am not able to use an A record, because it is add-on charge and I'm not sure if it is even necessary.

Any advice is much appreciated.

Re: DNS help - Sub Domain install

As long as it has the subdomain host in the browser I think it should work. You just have to first login to the root site at the root domain, then go into site settings and create a child site by chossong new site from the dropdown. After the site is created a new tab will appear for Host Name Mapping, add the host name (anysubdomain.mydomain.com in your example) to the child site. Now it should respond using the subdomain. If it still shows the main site try touching the web.config to recycle the app.

See here for documentation.

Hope it helps,

Joe

Re: DNS help - Sub Domain install

I got everything to work properly on DiscountASP.net, but I need to purchase the unlimited subdomain add-on at $5 a month.

Without the add-on, I can't create a wildcard record which will direct all subdomains to my domain.  This stinks, I otherwise like DiscountASP.

I could not create a CNAME record to point a subdomain to my domain either.

Thanks for your help, the documentation is fine.  Different hosts have their own DNS policies, so for DiscountASP.net, you will need the unlimited subdomain add-on for multiple sites by subdomain to work.
