One config question regarding to the multiple web sites hosting

Hi, Joe,

I have question regarding to host multiple sites - do we need to access the remote IIS server to modify the remote hosts file if we have multiple sites hosted in shared IP address?

I have a existing web site www.abcd.com based on the mojoportal version and I also created the second web site in the default site list page.  After create "Host Name Mapping" in the "site settings" page I need to get the hosts file and create the mapping relationship between the domain name and ip address.  However, the domain is the remote domain instead of localhost and I don't know if I need to get to my service provider to put such relationship into the remote hosts file?

I have read the article "Hosting Multiple Sites Based on Host Names" but it seems the problem can be solved in the localhost (127.0.0.1).  Not sure if I am wrong with the understanding.  Could you please give me a hand?  Thanks.

Re: One config question regarding to the multiple web sites hosting

If you're doing sites based on hostname, and it's a hostname the public will be visiting, you'll have to update DNS so clients can find the IP address of your site. Your web hosting provider should have tools for you to be able to add additional hostnames to their DNS records.

If you only need to hit that second hostname from clients you control, you could put entries into those clients' hosts files. But that would be something you'd have to maintain going forward.

Re: One config question regarding to the multiple web sites hosting

Thanks for your reply Jamie,

Actually My web hosting provider is Arvixe and I am using mojoportal Sitesetting page to create a new site.    After I create a new site inside the page, I make a host name such as www.abcd.com inside the "Host Name Mapping" tab and would like to use it as my second site name on the Internet.  The question is: Do I have to inform Arvixe to ask them for add my host name into their DNS records or is there anywhere I should check in the mojoportal system?

Thanks again for your help!

Re: One config question regarding to the multiple web sites hosting

Hi Henry,

Using Arvixe's Hosting Control Panel, you'll need to add the domain to your hosting space and to your website. Once it's there, the IIS website will respond to requests for the domain and mojoPortal will take it from there.

If you have trouble with the Arvixe control panel, request help from them. If they can't help you, consider switching to a better host.

HTH,
Joe D.
