Using Microsoft Live Connect for user login?

Microsoft changed the name of their product to Live Connect. Does this newer version of the Microsoft login app work in place of the Windows live option?

Re: Using Microsoft Live Connect for user login?

The best thing to use is the Janrain widget which encapsulates all the 3rd party login options including Microsoft, Google, Yahoo, Facebook, etc.  They handle any changes in the underlying providers over time. We use it on this site and it works very well and reduces friction for registration.

Excellent I will do that then.

Quick question.

If they login through the third-part login does it create an account in MJ and add them to authenticated users?

Re: Using Microsoft Live Connect for user login?

I set up Janrain, and tested it with my G+ account, it doesn't seem to create an account or at least give them authenticated user access. Since the PoserWorld.com website is mainly a premium access website I am not sure if I can use Janrain on it. Any thoughts or ideas would be great.

Re: Using Microsoft Live Connect for user login?

even without Janrain a user must register on the site before purchasing a premium membership, so it is no different and still reduces friction in the process for new members. Site Membership Pro does not handle site registration it only grants roles.

Re: Using Microsoft Live Connect for user login?

Thanks. Since we don't really offer anything to non-members I'll give Janrain a go when I migrated Designer Today. Our biggest issues was having the downloads website and a store website where they putchased a membership and then had to wait on us to manually setup their membership account and email them a welcome email. Not that everything is integrated, we should be good to go.

We don't have comments turned on on any websites so I guess Janrain might not work well. I apprecaite the time you took to clarify things for me. ;-)

Re: Using Microsoft Live Connect for user login?

I don't see any connection between enabling comments and using janrain other than it might be another case where you want to have a user authenticated before allowing comments.

When an unauthenticated user vists your membership page there is a prompt to either sign in or register in order to be able to purchase membership. I believe there is even a setting to show the janrain widget on the page if janrain is enabled. After registration or logging in the user is redirected back to the page where they started ie the membership page where they can then proceed to purchase premium access. Use of Janrain reduces friction in the site registration process because users don't need to create or remember any new passwords. That is its primary benefit, they can login with credentials they already know. Under the hood we do still have to populate the password field and we don't get access to the password they use to login with whatever provider they use in the Janrain widget so a random password is generated and stored in the mp_Users table upon registration but the user doesn't need to know this password to sign in with Janrain. The user could recover the password and login without using Janrain but generally it is more convenient to just click the button in the Janrain widget to login without having to keep track of passwords for different sites. So in short the main benefit of Janrain is that users don't have to remember yet another password and that reduces friction to registering on the site.

Re: Using Microsoft Live Connect for user login?

Thank you for the explnation. After thinking about it, it might confuse the 4,500 current members when they go to log in since their accounts wouldn't be synced via Janrain. May of our members are adult are 40+ years old (and often older). I will implement Janrain on DesignerToday when we migrate as never had user registration set up on that website as it was all free access to the articles and tutorials.

If I can figure out a way to utilize Janrain on PW without any resulting confusion I will consider it. This migration was scary enough since Poser World has been online since around 1996 and turned into a membership access website in 1999 and this makes onthe 3rd time we have moved to a different CMS system. Once things settle down, I amy reappraoch Janrain login. So far we've only had a about 10 people that needed assistance with logging in. We even scripted memberships so they have an order history and proper expiration date like they had previously, to ensure minimal confusion.

Re: Using Microsoft Live Connect for user login?

I can't remember off the top of my head whether Janrain will connect with an existing account but you might want to test it and see. ie register manually say with a google email and then logout and try logging in/registering with Janrain and the same google account and see if it attaches to the existing account or just tells you that the email is already in use on another account. If it does connect with an existing account then there should be no confusion, but if it doesn't then you may be better off not enabling it to avoid the confusion for existing users.

Re: Using Microsoft Live Connect for user login?

thanks Joe. If it were a fresh new website it would probably work. I will do some testing on our test website too see how I mightg can apply it, if it will sync up accounts.
