RSS Feed URL keeps changing

The RSS Feed URL to subscribe to the RSS keeps changing every once and a while.

Today I found the RSS URL on http://www.nhtheatreawards.org/news.aspx changed from

http://www.nhtheatreawards.org/Blog/RSS.aspx?p=73~87~-1&r=10186aba-5f49-4307-b309-86ea647adbcc

to

http://www.nhtheatreawards.org/Blog/RSS.aspx?p=73~87~-1&r=b703917d-931c-4497-8074-d84ac6e44e6c

This has been an issue for a few months now - I thought I may be doing something wrong but if I am, I cant figure it out.

  • mojoPortal Version 2.3.9.7 MSSQL
  • Operating System Microsoft Windows NT 6.1.7601 Service Pack 1
  • ASP.NET Info v2.0.50727 Running in Full Trust

Any tips to fix this?

Re: RSS Feed URL keeps changing

Hi Joe,

It isn't broken, that guid is intended to change periodically. It is used when you are using FeedBurner for your feed so that users subscribe to your actual feed url not the feedburner url. That way you don't lose subscribers if you ever stop using feedburner or if google ever kills it like they did for Google Reader.

The guid prevents redirecting the feed to feedburner so that the user subscribes to the real feed url. When the app recycles the guid changes and subsequent requests with the old guid get redirected to feedburner since it is no longer the valid guid to prevent redirects.

Hope that helps,

Joe

Re: RSS Feed URL keeps changing

Not sure I completely understand - unless you are saying that Feedburner needs to be used to have subscribers?

Or am I using the wrong RSS URL?

I am using NetworkedBlogs - and when the link changes - the NetworksBlogs push no longer works.  Also, I have the RSS link in iGoogle (which is going away.. I know) and that also breaks.

Any advice on how to proceed?

Re: RSS Feed URL keeps changing

No, that guid is not used by the /Blog/RSS.aspx page unless you have specified a feedburner url in settings of the blog.

If you specify a feedburner url and are using feedburner, then ultimately requests for the feed must be redirected to the feedburner feed url, but we don't want to redirect at the time the user subscribes because we want his feed reader to subscribe to the real url not the feedburner feed url, after he subscribes we do want to redirect requests from his feed reader to feedburner and this happens once the guid is expired/changed. So if feedburner is configured for the blog we check this guid and if it is the current one we don't redirect to feedburner.

If you don't have a feedburner url specified in the blog then that guid is ignored completely so it cannot affect anything or break anything.

If you are not using feedburner you can leave that param out of the url for whatever is consuming the feed.

Re: RSS Feed URL keeps changing

Thanks Joe.  So the Blog URL is simply http://www.nhtheatreawards.org/Blog/RSS.aspx?p=73~87~-1

Because I am feeling dumb on this one... was there a post or documentation that I missed on removing the GUID info from the URL querystring?

I ask because I simply right clicked the RSS icon and selected "Copy Link Location" to get the URL and figured that would always work.

Thanks again for all you do!

Re: RSS Feed URL keeps changing

Hi Joe,

As far as I know copy link location should work, it should ignore that extra parameter if it doesn't need it. I will fix it so that it doesn't add the guid to the link url unless it is needed, I do see that it is adding it whether it needs it or not.

Best,

Joe
