Registration awkwardness with Windows Live ID and email verification

I have a site that allows sign in with Windows Live ID, but also requires email confirmation.

If I register with my Windows Live ID, I then receive the email, click the link, arrive back on the site, then go to sign in.

Strangely. the Windows Live widget is now saying "sign out" - am I logged in already?  But the page is asking for email and password. What password - I didn't enter one. OK I enter my Windows Live ID password >> login failed. Harrumph, I give up, and take my interests elsewhere.

It seems the only way in is to "sign out" using the Live ID widget, which takes me away from the site (and gives me headaches about completing my sign out), then I have to browse back to the site and try again.

Am I doing something wrong, or do I have some bad config, or is this how it is? And if so, anything can be done to improve it?

PS related suggestion: if a user tries to sign in with username and password, and is actually in the member list with a Live ID, how about instead of just "Login Failed!" message we display "Login Failed, but your email is associated with a Windows Live ID - please try that!"  (only showing this if the site is still config'd to allow Live ID sign in of course).
