Windows authentication not working

I am having massive problems with enabling windows authentication using this article: http://www.mojoportal.com/usingwindowsauthentication.aspx

I have made the changes per the documentation and when I visit the site, I get the following message
401 - Unauthorized: Access is denied due to invalid credentials.

I have verified that domain users has modify access to the directory, and am at a loss of what to do next.

I am using Server 2008 w/ IIS7 and using IE as a browser on the same network (and yes, AD is working correctly)

Re: Windows authentication not working

Are you sure the web server is part of the AD domain and not a free standing machine?

I don't know what else to tell you, I know others using it and it works.
