Reading recommendations and tips

Hi all,

I came across mojoportal a few weeks ago and am loving the brilliance of the product but equally I really appreciate the amount of work that has gone into the documentation and supporting materials such as the videos which is extremely helpful to me as I am not very experianced at programming. I have never done it as a full time job but have done qualifications (while back now - VB6, C++, Java) and have also had periods where I have done more programming such as writing custom access applications with VBA and building simpler websites along with some more complex stuff as some times, years ago with PHP and more recently with VS as it is much more helpful to have that integrated environment to work in.  The problem I have is that as I don't do it full time and it can be a while between coding I tend to slip backwards and forget things that would have been simple at the time or when I was more involved in it .......

For me something like mojoportal is an amazing thing as both a product and as a learning tool but at the same time it can be quite intimidating due to the sheer volume of code and by how many more levels of complexity it contains than anything I have ever written.  That said it is a great learning tool and watch Joe's developer videos has been a real eye opener into how things are done by the pros.

My question is really to ask for any tips and hints on getting really stuck into the code and learning the asp.net framework and visual studio more comprehensively so that the way mojoportal works will begin to make more sense.  I know that some people recommend reading code and its very interesting to see how it works but I find it tends to stick more if I work through examples?  If there are any book recommendations that would also be very useful as there as so many out there and with .net 4.0 on the horizon there will be plenty more on the way.

I think that arguably the best single thing I need to do is to spend more time reading and writing code to keep that level of familiarity and in the long term the rest will start falling into place, any heads up on a jumpstart method or methods/books that have worked well for others would be much appreciated.

Regards

Andrew
