toolbar for administration links

Hi, Joe

In the previous release you added the toolbar for administration links. But the phrase "show bar" added in layout.Master and it can not be configured using resource file.

And more about this 'toolbar'

It has been said many good words about it. I think it was a good idea. The same type of toolbar is available in most CMS. But the realization of its is very weak in mojoportal. Why? Because the appearance of this panel depends on many factors: From browser, from the operating system's at which the browser works, from the screen resolution, from the size of the fonts installed on the system.

Yesterday I gathered the statistics. View of this panel is terrible for 70% of computers. Huge empty panel. Words on this panel, or are outside the screen or see only the edge of the words. I think that the presence of the panel in this form will only alienate people from the mojoportal. People like to use a particular browser, a certain screen resolution, font height. And as soon as they change something after the install Windows then the contents of the panel no longer be visible on the screen. In other CMS is no such problem. And more, in most CMS this panel at the top of the screen, rather than at the bottom

Best regards, Alexander

Re: toolbar for administration links

Hi Alexander,

First, I want to clarify that this toolbar is NOT a feature of the CMS. The CMS provides some convenient admin links, where they are located on the page and how they are dressed up is completely up to skinning. This toolbar was a neat thing I added it to most of the skins because it seemed cooler than what we had before. You don't have to use the toolbar I made, you can make one to your own liking or modify the one I made, you can change the text of the show button in your layout.master.

We include a number of skins with mojoPortal to give people a good start on their custom skins, it is not my expectation that people will use the included skins as is though they are free to do so.

Many of the skins have similar elements in common not because it is the only way to do it, but because they are all maintained by me and I happen to do it similar.

Best,

Joe

Re: toolbar for administration links

Hi, Joe

But users who first set the host mojoportal or explore the system on the demo site - What will they think about the mojoportal? As I previously wrote on the 70% of computers will be visible to a horrible blank large panel. Now I have given up the bar and return to the old version.

Best regards, Alexander

Re: toolbar for administration links

Hi Alexander,

A cannot accept your data as representative  and therefore I disagree with your conclusion.

I made sure the toolbar works at 1024x768 screen resolution. I know the toolbar has problems at screen resolutions lower than 1024x768, perhaps in your user population you have 70% of users using a lower resolution but that is not true of internet users in general and certainly not true for my visitors.

screen resolution statistics show 0 below 1024/768

0% of my visitors have screen resolution lower than 1024x768. The web has generally moved beyond concern for 800x600 anymore.

But again, if it is an issue you can remove the toolbar and do something else as you have done.

Best,

Joe

Re: toolbar for administration links

Hi Joe

It's not the resolution of the screen! My users are working largely on the screen resolution 1280x1024. This is due to a combination of factors (repeat: From browser, from the operating system's at which the browser works, from the screen resolution, from the size of the fonts installed on the system.)

Toolbar is always completely on the screen! But it is empty Or is only visible to the edge of the text! The text in the panel goes off the screen! Coordinates of the text is not calculated correctly.

Re: toolbar for administration links

Hi Alexander,

While you say this issue can be caused by various system settings even at higher screen resolution, I assume the symptom is the same as what I was seeing at screen resolutions lower than 1024x768. By a simple css fix I was able to make the toolbar display correctly at any screen resolution so probably this also fixed the same symptom as you were seeing at higher resolution.

You can confirm it by trying demo.mojoportal.com, as I have updated it with the latest build, you may need to clear your browser cache to make sure it reloads the css.

Best,

Joe

Re: toolbar for administration links

Hi, Joe

I looked at a new kind of toolbar.

In IE 8 and FireFox 3.6 phrase "show bar" is visible only half (cut height)

In IE 6 the height of the panel is 61 pixel!!!! (other browsers 36 pixel)

Best regards, Alexander
