I need an idiots guide to upgrading!

Hi, I have tried upgrading to the latest version, but i am very new to this and all I got was a fresh install - I made a back up so its ok, but how do I upgrade without losing all my pages and everything.  I know i sound stupid but I need a step by step idiots guide to walk me throught it.  Anu help would be gratefully received.
