Show the access rights of groups on 1 screen

Hi all,

I think it would be a good idea to have the possibility to show the security settings / access rights of an application on one (1) screen. E.g. a matrix showing the groups as columns and the menu-choices as rows and in the cells giving information on the access rights.

Yes, I can see how that would be helpful in managing permissions. First we have to see what happens after the conversion to the new Web Parts and whether we would also want role permissions on content modules. After that we can see better how to implement this feature.

Cheers,

Hi Joe,

I noticed some writings about Web Parts on MoJo, but thought is had to do with some testing you are doing.

Your answer suggests that you will start using Web Parts on a short notice. Allthough I can imagine it has some impact on the solution of my question, I think if the menu-components are not changed, there will be no impact.

So the question is: will you change the menu-component?

Re: Show the access rights of groups on 1 screen

The possible impact I see is that right now permissions for roles are set at the page level for view and edit but with WebParts we may try to change the model to de-couple content a little from pages so modules can be on more than one page. If we do that we may need permissions at the module level in addition to page level.

Having the feature to be able to show the same module on multiple pages may not be related to WebParts directly but if I'm going to add that feature I will likely do it at the same time I convert to WebParts since they are both part of a revamp of the module architecture.

There may be a little relation with this idea and WebParts in that I think WebParts also provides some mechanism to have a catalog of available webparts to show on a page.

Make sense?

Re: Show the access rights of groups on 1 screen

I can imagine situations in which it would make sense. But I think for the purpose I am using MoJo it does not make sense.

Page driven security enables authorisation for content changes within a context. I.e. the menu structure leads the user to a context and within that context he / she is allowed to change things. IMHO I don not think WebParts bases security will cover this. Perhaps a combination of both WebParts and page driven security will be better but maintaining access to content in such a way may be cumbersome.

Re: Show the access rights of groups on 1 screen

I agree with you, I want to avoid over-complicating the security model. I really haven't decided on any changes yet or thought through the implications yet, only enough to know I will have to think through it when I get ready to implement the feature to allow modules on multiple pages. It may turn out no changes are needed, I'm just deferring judgement until my brain is wrapped closer around the issue.

If you are interested in implementing a feature to show permissions based on the current model feel free to have at it, it would be welcome help and I'm sure even if the model does change it can be adjusted.

If not I'm sure I will get to it at some point.

Cheers,

Joe
