I would like to suggest that the categories be placed in a box that can be rolled up or down to find the category you want to use, much like is done in wordPress. The other possiblity is a pop up list, but these can get a little annoying, because if you veer off of the list it disappears. The box with the categories in it so you can roll up and down is simple and keeps your categories in a single list.
