duplicate Urls

Joe, I use google webmaster tools and have been for longer then I have used mojoPortal. I just found out that I have two URLs that refer to the same physical page. One has a number in front of the page designation and the other doesn't. How do I resolve a problem like this without creating more problems? I am afraid to delete either of them for fear that I will also delete the content and then have to go find it and move it to the correct page.

Re: duplicate Urls

I would need more info to understand the problem. I would need to know the specific urls that are being reported as duplicates. Do they correspond to 2 different links in your menu or site map? None of the pages in the menu are physical pages, they are all virtual pages unless you've created virtual pages that link to phyiscal pages.

Re: duplicate Urls

I figured you would need more information, but I did not know what information. Actually I found a third page. Here they are and they all map to http://www.whybaptist.com/Default.aspx?pageid=19 if that helps.  I was a little new at this when I created these and they have not caused any real problems so far, but the google bot is going  through duplicates, I am not sure if that helps or hurts it is just redundent

Re: duplicate Urls

I don't see why google would complain about that. That just means you have 3 friendly urls all resolving to the same page. The actual site map you submit to google webmaster tools should be this url: http://www.whybaptist.com/SiteMap.ashx and there is no duplicate there.

What message is google giving you? Do they provide any links to more details about the problem?

The one being used in the menu and site map is http://www.whybaptist.com/1forestsstudy.aspx, I think you could safely delete the other friendly urls from the url manager, but I wonder if you have linked to that page somewhere in your content using one of the other urls. Google may see that when it crawls your site, but it is not seeing duplicates in your site map, because those other 2 urls are not in the site map.

Hope it helps,

Joe

Re: duplicate Urls

Actually google did not complain, but they are listed as unreachable URLs for whatever reason. Two of them are for printer friendly pages and I can understand why google can not get into their. I can probably fix that by disallowing that page. The only one I was really concerned about was the three URLs, but I think you are right, it is not that much of a problem. Thanks very much for your help.
