I believe it's available for production but I can't get at from my MSDN account yet. MS is good about releasing software but not making generally available for a few weeks (sometimes months). Honestly, I wouldn't use it in production until 1) it's been proven there aren't any big issues and 2) I have a need for it.

I'm not expecting any incompatibility for SQL 2012. I'd say if you have access to it and it is a full released version rather than a CTP and would rather install that then go ahead and do so and let us know if you do encounter any problems, but I'd be very surprised if you do. I was still running SQL 2005 for a long time on my dev machine after SQL 2008 came out and I'm not likely to install SQL 2012 very soon just because I don't really need it or have any compelling reason to upgrade, but if I was setting up a new dev machine I'd probably install it. We have broad compatibility for SQL 2005 2008 and Sql Azure and though 2012 may have new features I doubt very much that MS will break any old features.
