Free Nivo Slider for mojoPortal

Hi Gang

I have developed a few Nivo Slider (Very Cool jQuery Slide show) User Controls which allows you to add the Nivo Slider to mojoPortal as a feature.  You can also make it a header/banner slide show using the included Header version of the User Control.  It does require that you edit a few files to tell the slider the names and size of your images.  For those that are comfortable uploading a few images and editing 2 or 3 files, I hope you will love my Nivo Slider implementation.

What is Nivo Slider?  It is a very popular and cool FREE open souce jQuery Image Slider that has over 700,000 downloads.  You can visit their Website and take a peek here. (http://nivo.dev7studios.com/).
Nice eh?
With my code you can easily add this cool Nivo Slider to your mojoPortal Website!

To get started adding this to your mojoPortal Website just go to my Website and download it.  I have details instructions on how to install it on your Website page or header section with your images.  You will also see my Nivo Slider working on my mojoPortal Website in the mojoPortal section.

Download my code in the mojoPortal section for free here: (http://www.hubka.com/)

For developers who may want to see what I've done or modify the code you can download my VS 2010/Dot.Net 4.0 Nivo project source code free.

I also have a few free mojoPortal - Artisteer skins that you can download and I will be adding more free skins monthly.

Enjoy!

Re: Free Nivo Slider for mojoPortal

Rick! This is GREAT!

Super work. No problem that it isn´t "user friendly", I think it is with the documentation you have written.
I will download and use it on some sites, especially the header-version.

I have not tried it out yet, but I see on the http://www.sketch2plan.com/ site that there is only implemented on the home page and also on your own site that you use different skins for different pages. I did not know this was possible in mojoPortal. Is this a standard feature that I have totally missed or is it something special that you have created?

Thanks a lot!

Re: Free Nivo Slider for mojoPortal

Thanks so much Mat

Having different skins on different pages is a standard feature in mojoPortal.  You just have to turn the feature on and then in "Page Settings" for each page a new drop down called "Skin" will appear.

To turn this feature on go to Administration > SiteSettings.  13 settings down the page check the box called "Allow Setting Skin for Page?". The save.

If you want the same skin on all pages but Nivo only on the Home Page.  Make a copy of your skin folder and add the word header to the name of the folder on the new skin copy.  Then modify that skins layout.master and use that skin copy for your home page only.  I use this same technique to have a site with no header at all on any page but the home page because I want all the other pages to have tons of real estate for text content.

Let me know if you have any issues getting Nivo Slider to work.

Re: Free Nivo Slider for mojoPortal

Thanks Rick! I will have a look at it today.

Thanks also for the tip about different skins on different pages. I had totally missed that and really wanted it, but it seems that the feature was present all the time, but I just didn't have a clue :-)

This feature of yours is a little misplaced I think. Just plain luck that I stumbled upon it in this General Questions forum.
Should be pubilshed in http://www.mojoportal.com/communitydownloads.aspx instead in my opinion.

Hi Rick,

Nice work!

I've added a link to it from the Community downloads section.

Would have go to it yesterday but my internet has been down since Friday afternoon and it just now got fixed.

Thanks Joe

That is so coolcool.

Your Internet downcrying
For us developers, when that happens it's so painful that you can't even relax during your new unexpected time off.  But knowing you I bet you got in some good quality guitar time.

Re: Free Nivo Slider for mojoPortal

Hey Rick,

I'm no different, it stresses me out when my internet goes down because then I worry if someone needs help, especially if someone needs help with an add on product they have purchased, my goal is to be very responsive, and it makes me feel powerless if I don't know what is going on with my site. The stress is a little less if it happens on a weekend though since it is reasonable for me to have some time off. I actually went to a coffee shop yesterday morning to get online just to be able to check in on things.

I was pleased and surprised that Time Warner Cable actually sent someone out on a Sunday morning to fix it. I thought I would have to wait until Monday and would have to go to the coffee shop again today, but the guy came this morning and actually ended up replacing the line from the source post to my house. It is a buried line but I think not buried too deep because my brother was aerating the yard with a machine when it went down, and the theory is the aerator must have nicked the cable or something, it didn't cut it completely though since tv was still working though the picture quality had also dropped. In any case he ran a new cable, currently running above ground across the yard but he said he would send someone else back to bury it during the week. So now our tv picture is the best its ever been since I've lived here. We only have the very basic channels though and since historically we've never had a good picture in the upstairs rooms with cable, I've long since unplugged it from my tv and use an over the air hd antenna for local channels and just a Blu Ray player with Netflix for most of my tv and movie needs. I may have to try plugging the cable back in to see if its better now, though the antenna is working well.

Luckily we don't have internet outages that often. Working from home I was always accessing the net via wireless when I used my iphone, so I canceled my data plan with ATT quite a while back and switched from my iphone to a cheap phone since I couldn't really justify paying for the data plan when I wasn't even using it. Wish they would have let me use the iphone without a data plan but they wouldn't. Every time the internet does go down it gets me thinking about calling ATT to have them add the data plan back so I would at least have an alternate way to check email and check on my sites. If it were down for very long that is what I would end up doing.

You are right though that I do try to embrace things like that when they happen, I don't like it that I feel addicted to the internet and I think we all need a little vacation from the internet now and then. The stress of being disconnected is not so bad as long its its not a long time, and short doses of getting away from the internet I think are good for us.

I've been teaching myself piano lately and yesterday I did a lot more practicing since I couldn't get online and Netflix wasn't happening. I'm much better on guitar but I'm really enjoying learning the piano these days, working on site reading and learning to play some Bach pieces. My goal is to learn some Scott Joplin stuff like Maple Leaf Rag and The Entertainer once I get past the beginner stage. Piano music is good stuff to listen to when I'm developing too, if I'm working on something complicated music with lyrics can be distracting.

Cheers,

Joe

Re: Free Nivo Slider for mojoPortal

Rick,

Love the new Nevo implementation - looks fabulous as a header! I use the Nevo slider in my Portfolio area by "hacking it" into an HTML Content module, but having it as an actual mojoPortal feature is a huge improvement. When I get a spare moment, I'll download it and check out the workflow. Mind if I do a review on it?

Joe - 'net outages for work-at-homes are dreadful; I've got my phone data plan, wi-fi here, and the nearest coffee shops all lined up, so that I don't drop the ball on support calls/e-mails, because I am just that paranoid about it.

Re: Free Nivo Slider for mojoPortal

Hi Carole

Thanks.  I'd rather you do not review it until it is done.

On my Website I state.  "The code works great but is not polished, so I call this feature "a work in progress" and I am sharing it in it's current semi-automatic mode."

This is Alpha code, not even Beta yet.  My testing has it working good as a feature for the page Body.  However in 1 out of 7 skins I tried I can not get it displaying right in the header yet.

I am going to automate this in the future sometime allowing people to simply enter the image width, height and folder in the feature settings).  The header implementation will never be automated because changes to layout.master are required.

Rick

Re: Free Nivo Slider for mojoPortal

I can completely understand; it'll be more fun to review when you've got it to "feature complete" status. Be sure to post something when you've got it where you'd like it to be!
