Happy Holidays to the mojoPortal Community

I hope you've all had a wonderful Thanksgiving (those of you in the US) and a Merry Christmas and/or Happy Holidays filled with joy and warmth shared with your friends, family and loved ones.

We've been very busy in November and December and actually we made 2 releases in December. mojoPortal 2.3.7.5 was released on December 1, 2011, and we've followed up with mojoPortal 2.3.7.6 on December 28, 2011. We had actually planned to release 2.3.7.5 in November, but it took a little longer than expected and with the Thanksgiving holiday, we also didn't manage to put out a newsletter in November. I realize that many of you are probably still on holiday and enjoying time with your families until after the New Year, but I didn't want to miss another edition of our monthly newsletter and we've got several very nice new features and improvements to share as we approach the new year.

mojoPortal 2.3.7.6 Released

Whats New?:

  • Artisteer 3.1 Support! Artisteer 3.1 was released on November 30, 2011. I think this is the best release of Artisteer so far and I wanted to make it even easier to design skins for mojoPortal than it has been in previous versions. So we created a whole new set of Artisteer 3.1 skins that ship with mojoPortal and moved most of our older skins into the extra-skins.zip download that we make available with each release. We've made a skin for each of the possible layout configurations in Artisteer 3.1, so the main thing is selecting the correct skin to start with as indicated in our updated documentation for Artisteer 3.1. In previous versions we didn't have examples for all the possible combinations so it sometimes required editing the layout.master file, but for this release one of the included skins should have exactly what you need in the layout.master file and as long as you choose the right one it should work much easier. You can also get the .artx files for our included skins available in the ArtisteerFiles.zip on our download page in case you'd like to modify the designs using Artisteer.
  • New Audio and Video Player features based on jPlayer and contributed by our newest team member Kerry Doan.
  • Major improvements to our support for Windows Live Writer was introduced in version 2.3.7.5 and refined even further in version 2.3.7.6. You can create and edit CMS pages in addition to blog posts. See the links below in the Updated Documents section for details.
  • A change in the bahavior when SSL is available, we no longer try to get out of SSL on pages that are not configured to require it. See the documentation here for details about the changes and the reasons behind them.
  • In version 2.3.7.5 we added support to close a site so that only Administrators can browse the content. In 2.3.7.6 we added a config setting to hide the menu by default if the site is closed and the user is not an Administrator.

For more details see the blog posts for mojoPortal 2.3.7.5 and mojoPortal 2.3.7.6 releases.

New and Updated Articles

Each month we continue to fill in some gaps in our documentation and update some documents that were out of date and no longer accurate. Below are links for some of the new and updated articles.

Arvixe Web Hosting is our top financial contributor to the mojoPortal project. They provide us with a dedicated server for running our site, a very generous affiliate program only available to open source projects, and they also sponsor members of our community as liaisons to help out in general in our forums and especially to help out if anyone has problems with their hosting at Arvixe. If you click one of our Arvixe ads and then purchase hosting and keep it for at least 60 days we get a very generous contribution from Arvixe no matter how low the hosting cost is to you. We think Arvixe is one of the best large shared hosting providers around. If you need hosting click one of our ads and give them a try, by doing so you will also be helping the mojoPortal project.

Arvixe Web Hosting

Carole Bennett of Indigo Tea and Ian McIntosh are our current Arvixe Commiunity Liaisons. Both of them have been writing a lot of great blog posts with good tutorials and tips for mojoPortal on the Arvixe Blog and we are maintaining a list of them here.

For those who would rather have someone else handle all the technical details of their hosting including installation, configuration, and upgrades of mojoPortal, we recommend i7MEDIA. You can let them handle all the technical details so you can focus on your site content. Joe Davis of i7MEDIA is our Community Manager, an expert in all things mojo and an all around helpful guy that you can count on.

We are continually trying to learn from our newsletter process, if any of you notice this message landing in your spam folder please do let me know.

Warm Regards,

Joe Audette

Help Spread the Word

If you are a fan of mojoPortal, it would be a big help if you could give us a favorable review in the Windows Web Application Gallery. Since it is such a big source of downloads for us, reviews there are probably the most helpful, and ratings and reviews on our Codeplex download page are also very helpful for promoting the project. We don't have much of a marketing budget so we really depend on grass roots promotion and your help is greatly appreciated.

Did you know you can subscribe to email notifications of forum posts on mojoportal.com? If you are doing custom development with mojoPortal why not subscribe to the developer forums to learn from other developers and share your knowledge by answering questions from other developers.
