best way to perform a migration of thousands of pages from non-ASP.net to Mojo Portal

Hello all,

I am asking this question on behalf of one of the staff at Gordon College.  He would like to know what the easiest method would be for migrating the college web site to Mojo portal from Java based and Cold Fusion based.  The issue is that there are thousands of pages of web content, and there's already been two transitions here.  Does anybody have any suggestions on how to make this easier, and even possible for that matter?  Thanks!

Re: best way to perform a migration of thousands of pages from non-ASP.net to Mojo Portal

Hi,

There isn't any specific way to do this as there is there is way for us to know the data structure of the current site. A good developer and DBA would be able to put something together but this would require intimate knowledge of both the current website platform and mojoPortal. In the end, paying a developer to put something together for this one-time project would probably be prohibitive.

Considering this is for a college, it might be best to use this project as a series of lessons for students that wish to learn about web development. Students could simply copy/paste the content from the old system into the new. Not the fastest method but certainly the cheapest.

Joe D.

I'll put that on the table for him.  Thanks so much, as one of his goals was for some of his staff to be trained in some things, and this might be an add-on to the agenda if he can get his programmers to agree on it.  The issue is that the programmers have to be involved at all since Mojo Portal is supposed to negate the need for web development.

Hi,

For a great many projects, mojoPortal does negate the need for web development but you are asking about moving a massive production website to mojoPortal and expecting that no development will need to be done.

There isn't a magic button one can push to make any CMS or Web Platform pull content from another CMS. There will always be some level of development effort to migrate a site from one platform to another. The Gordon site looks very nice but it doesn't look anything like any of the Skins that come with mojoPortal so development will need to be done to create the skin and I am sure the site has at least a few features that student's and faculty are accustomed to that will require development.

A car negates the need for walking to work but you still have to walk to your car.

I do not wish to be rude but I am just trying to get the point across.

Joe D.

You're not being rude at all.  I'm the one sounding like a moron, and I want to thank you for correcting me.  I'll let him know that too.  The only thing that students and faculty are really used to is the blackboard online learning system we use (nasty old thing, if you ask me), so I sent him a sharepoint alternative called learning management system which does all of blackboard's duties plus more.  If that does come up and we end up using sharepoint in the mixx as well, can mojo portal be deployed as a sharepoint site so as to avoid the need for a zillion sharepoint servers?  I ask that since Gordon takes the one OS, one server, one application running on it model.  Thanks.

mojoPortal can't be deployed as a SharePoint site because it isn't SharePoint. The two can run alongside each other on the same server or on different servers, there shouldn't be a problem at all. I have used the LMS deal with SharePoint and I think you will be disappointed with it if that is the route you go. Blackboard is a good product, maybe your schools version is out-of-date? Another good one is eCollege (http://ecollege.com).

Thanks for the info.  i'll have to keep looking if it's all ASP.net we want here, which it is.  Blackboard's issue is that it's not ASP.net, therefore, not supported on Windows.  I'll take a peak at the link you just sent, and I'll let him know about the sharepoint thingo.  Which features exactly did you not like about it?
