small problem: no auto-return using paypal standard

Hi guys.  I finally got this thing sufficiently setup to do a "live test," setting a price of $1 on a skin pkg.  All the emails and actual financial transaction appear to have been performed perfectly, but when the transaction was finished at paypal, it did not send me back to CrypticSites; it offered me a link back to (my paypal email address, omitted for obvious reasons) -- because when I got to paypal I tried to login to my acct, but it told me I was trying to login to the seller's acct -- DOH! -- so I just opted for using a credit/debit card -- since I have my paypal settings such that a paypal acct is optional.  As I said, it performed the transaction and all the emails perfectly -- just never did the auto-return.  Do you think that my stumble at the login step somehow messed that up?

I'd really hate to have to try to get tech support from the paypal people; half of 'em don't even seem to speak english, and they send you to one of their incomprehensible tutorials for THEIR shopping cart system.

Thx!

Andria

Edit:

PS:  I used the link provided in the email sent to the buyer, it took me to the designated page (the one it really should have auto-returned to); I did the MyAccount/Order History thing, found the link, downloaded it, and voila, it works beautifully.  Maybe I need to somehow have the paypal process open a new page, target _blank instead of target _top ?

Re: small problem: no auto-return using paypal standard

Hi Andria

I remember when I setup a Paypal Web Selling page for a few people this year.  Paypal would not allow the seller to be the buyer too.  I had to set the price to $1.00 and have a friend buy it with their account to test it.  You would think Paypal would allow a seller to test but it appears not.

BTW...  I did this on plain HTML sites with dreamweaver and used a free Dreamweaver Extension Payment Buttons for PayPal from WebAssist here.

Re: small problem: no auto-return using paypal standard

In my paypal acct, the return URL is specified as http://crypticsites.net/Services/PayPalPDTHandler.aspx (which is correct), but it didn't return there; once the transaction was finished, it just offered me that link to (my paypal email address).  Not sure why, unless it was because of that little hiccup at the beginning of the paypal process -- attempting to login to my acct .

...puzzled

Re: small problem: no auto-return using paypal standard

I was able to perform the transaction with no problem, by opting to use a debit/credit card at paypal rather than logging in to my paypal acct -- I have my acct at paypal set to "paypal acct optional".

The only problem was the failure to auto-return, which might have been my fault -- I just don't know.  But I might get my son to do a test transaction from his computer, and see if that helps any.

Thx,

Andria

Re: small problem: no auto-return using paypal standard

I'm not sure that PayPal does any forceful redirect, they want to show their own confirmation page so the user knows the transaction was completed so they provide a link back to the site but probably do not forcefully redirect the user back to the site.

Best,

Joe

Re: small problem: no auto-return using paypal standard

Hmm... I use Paypal for any web purchase that offers it, and I think I have seen actual timed redirects, back to the site from which I made the purchase, but it's entirely possible that this is some different "flavor" of paypal implementation, like pro or express, and that the standard version only offers the link back... which was probably messed up by my attempt to logon to my paypal acct.

I'm going to be sending some $ to my son tomorrow for this WoW vent-server thing he's doing (he's apparently hosting a "vent server," whatever that is, and will be giving CrypticSites a prominent link for the 6 months he's doing it, so I'm thinking "potential vertical market," making WoW skins) -- so he's going to do a test purchase from his computer, to see if it works better when it's not my system with all my various cookies and whatnot.

It looks very promising, regardless of the outcome; it did all the "hard parts" beautifully, the transaction with paypal, all the misc. emails.  The email to the buyer contains the linkback and instructions for downloading, so it's really not that challenging for them to figure out what to do -- though underestimating human stupidity is always hazardous.  ;-P

So I'm proceeding with getting all the "premium" skin pkgs online.

BTW, I'm also setting up a forum on this new site, and I have to say, it's awesome; I've setup a lot of different kinds of forums, and this may be the easiest one ever.  Nice!!

Thx,

Andria

Re: small problem: no auto-return using paypal standard

Good news: the test my son did worked perfectly -- yay!  I have to say that this is the FIRST e-commerce thing for any CMS I've ever been able to get to work -- mainly because this one is so clear and straightforward.

Joe, I know you said it's an "alpha" level program, but I think the starkness of it contributes mightily to its ease-of-use -- it's so simple to set up!

Thanks!!!!

Andria
