CodeSmith 2.6 on Windows 7 64

Is there a trick or anything special you have to do to get the included version of CodeSmith to work on Windows 7 64bit? It complains about not have an older framework version installed. I have those version installed, but they are 32bit. I have tried running in compatibility mode but that does not work.

Re: CodeSmith 2.6 on Windows 7 64

I don't know of any solution if it doesn't work, it may require the 1.1 .NET framework, but that version of Codesmith is very very old so it would not surprise me if it can't be used on newer versions of windows. I haven't tried it in a long time because I have a licensed copy of Codesmith 4.x.

I could never find a solution either. I did have the 1.1 version of the framework installed, but I could not find a way to force the Code Smith exe to use it since the 32bit version of the framework install into a different path. I just broke down and bought the newest version.

Re: CodeSmith 2.6 on Windows 7 64

Joe, just wondering if you ever used t4 (http://channel9.msdn.com/posts/egibson/MSDN-Radio-Code-Generation-with-T4-and-Visual-Studio-with-Oleg-Sych/) Seems pretty cool and its free with vs 2010 ;)

(would be a nice alternative to CodeSmith 2.6)

Re: CodeSmith 2.6 on Windows 7 64

I'd second the vote for a switch to T4, providing Joe has the time to do that. I actually broke down and bought the cheapest CodeSmith license a few months ago to get going, but I agree that it would be great to have a Visual Studio integrated solution instead. Now that mojoPortal deployment has been brought inside VS, maybe it's time to bring the code generation inside too? yes

Oleg Sych has a ton of T4 articles on his blog. Scott Hanselman has a pretty comprehensive overview of T4 too.

Re: CodeSmith 2.6 on Windows 7 64

It is an interesting idea, but I don't have time to work on this any time soon. Maybe a community member would like to work on it and create at least a proof of concept template that produces the same result as one of the included Codesmith templates.

Best,

Joe
