Data template approach

Hi Joe,

I've been using sitecore www.sitecore.com in my company, and its been interesting to compare the two. I think sitecore is overly complicated at times and not as userfriendly, but i do like more strict control on that sitecore offers when entering content at times.

Sitecore is set out like this, you define data templates ie a promo will have a title, some copy and an image. So you create a data template with two text boxes and a image field. You then say where on the page it can go, what rendering style it should use and who can use it. Its quite long winded in my opinion wit some of the processes, but i do like the idea of data templates in some circumstances.

To do a promo like this in mojoportal I would use the content template feature, but the problem with this, is that the user has too much control, it seems quite easy to delete some styling in design view, or add 3 images for one promo. It might sound absurd, but I deal with business users every day who use cms's and if we didnt give them strict instructions, they would find a way of deviating from what elements should be in a promo.

I talked a lot about promos, but i dont mean just promos, for example this page

http://www.malariahotspots.co.uk/travelGuides.asp

it has two promos on the right, which you could say build a promo user control in mojo that just accepts 1 image , title and text job done, but then, in the content area, I know if i coded a table with the 2 columns, and 3 rows with the content for Africa, South America and Indian Subcontinent, next time someone comes to change a picture or text who has no html experience, then they'll mess it up for sure.

Solution: Would be a way to create data templates such as promo, or content list as in the above example which has a style associated with it, and then the user somehow right cicks on a content slot, insert -> content list (from a list of datatemplates) and then it gives you a box where you put a image , title and copy, and you repeat the process again to add south america and indian subcontinent. This way the user is forced to adhere to the design set out, and cannot add any crazy stuff into the page. Rich text slots of course would be used for very generic content pages where its ok to add whatever you like.

I hope that makes sense, what do you think? I'm not knocking mojoportal, i think its great, but would like to add an option for some more strict control, i gave a site i did to a friend to use, but after a while, it was a mess because he was allowed too much freedom when editing content where id done some html styling in the content areas.

Interested to hear what you think and if its something you'd consider in future versions or if you're already working on something like it, or if you've already done it since the last release i downloaded.

Many Thanks

Tim
