Installation to 1&1 hosting provider

Joe,

I finally settled on a hosting provider (based partially on your recommendations on your hosting page) using 1&1 (microsoft stack).

Is it possible to use the microsoft web deployment tool to do a basic (original) install to a 3rd party hosting provider?

Any help will be much appreciated (i.e. beers in your future)!

Thanks,

Bryan Fisel

Re: Installation to 1&1 hosting provider

Hi Bryan,

If you have a dedicated Windows server from 1and1 yes, you can login to the dedicated server using remote desktop and you should be able to use the Platform Installer to install mojoPortal.

I only recommend 1and1 for dedicated servers, I do NOT recommend them for shared hosting, as far as I know their shared hosting does not work with mojoPortal, though I have not looked at it lately, the last reports I had from others who had tried it, it did not work at all. But maybe it can work now if they are offering .NET 3.5 hosting. The problem was before they offered 2.0 .NET but did not have ms ajax installed. This was quite a while back when mojoPortal ran on 2.0 .NET, but recent versions of mojoPortal require .NET 3.5, and the ajax stuff is baked into 3.5 so it is not a separate install, as it was in the 2.0 days.

They are absolutely the best deal I know of for dedicated servers though.

Hope it helps,

Joe

Re: Installation to 1&1 hosting provider

To clarify, the Web App Gallery/Platform Installer cannot be used to install at any shared hosting, only on a dedicated server.

Best,

Joe

Re: Installation to 1&1 hosting provider

Joe,

Thanks for the info on 1and1 (from a shared perspective).

Have you had any experience with iXHosting?  They indicate they support .NET 3.5.

I am looking for a shared provider with unlimited bandwidth.

Thanks,

Bryan

Re: Installation to 1&1 hosting provider

No, I don't know anything about that host, but in theory any host with ASP.NET 3.5 SP1 should be fine. How any host holds up to high traffic and bandwidth usage is hard to know unless you try them or find others who have used them.

Best,

Joe
