News items and portal search?

I am currently evaluating mojoPortal and am not finding some features so I could use some help.

One feature that is very import for our situation is the ability to add news articles and have a list of recent headlines display on the main page.  Ideally, we would just add a news item on a single page and both an index page and a recent headlines block would be automatically created.  I would also like something similar with feature articles and documents.  I just don't see a news module of any kind.

Also, is there a content search available?  I don't even see a way to search the forums, which made looking for answers to my questions pretty tedious.

Is this stuff available somewhere and I'm just not seeing it?  I want to migrate away from Plone, but I need some of the basics.

Thanks!

Re: News items and portal search?

Hi,

People often us the Blog as a News module. If you want to show headlines on the home page or elsewhere you can use a Feed Manager module and aggregate the feed from the blog.

The search link in the top right corner of the page searches all site content including the forums.

Hope it helps,

Joe

Re: News items and portal search?

Thanks, I'll give that a try and see how it goes.  If the blog module works, I would think it would be useful to clone a copy as News to make this a bit more intuitive.

Also, how do I delete a site?  I followed the instructions in the FAQ and added the entry to web.config, but I still don't see a delete option.

Thx!

Re: News items and portal search?

You can only delete secondary sites not the root site. So if you made the settings to show the button it will only appear when you select a child site from the dropdown list in Site Settings.

Hope it helps,

Re: News items and portal search?

I was selecting a child site and didn't see it.  I found the problem, though.  The FAQ said to add the key, which I did, but I didn't notice that the key was already in web.config, just set to false.  I guess that must be a change from when the FAQ was written.

Thx again!

Re: News items and portal search?

Using the blog module doesn't really work for news, unless I'm not understanding the approach.  The intent is to have individual news items, one per page, with an index page that links to all the news items.  The blog just displays multiple news items on a page.  That's ok if the news items are short, but not if they are long, with pictures, etc.

What I would really like is to be able to add a news item and have the title (and perhaps the summary) automatically reflected in an index page of news articles.  Is that possible to do with the current version?

Re: News items and portal search?

The blog is very configurable, you can make it show just excerpts and link to the full post, each post has its own url. Click the gear icon next to the title of the blog and you'll see a lot of settings to experiment with.

I use it for news on our intranet and it works well for my needs

Re: News items and portal search?

We use the blog feature for news as well. Changing the excerpt size and removing feedback creates a nice solution. You can also date when something shows up. I haven't found a place to date something to disappear though which isn't necessarily a good blog feature but would be for news items.

Re: News items and portal search?

Ok, after working with the blog config a little, I got it so it simulates the news index page using excerpts.  That's promising!

Can someone help me with how to configure the Feed Manager to display the most recent news items from the "news" blog?  The documentation just shows examples for using it with some feed services, but not with MP content.  When I try plugging in the blog feed URL, I just get the following error:

We're sorry but a server error has occurred while trying to process your request.
The error has been logged and will be reviewed by our staff as soon as possible. It is possible that the error was just a momentary hiccup and you may wish to use the back button and try again or go back to the home page.

Re: News items and portal search?

Hi

No direct news module or headlines. but it's very comfortably achievable with the blogs in conjuction with the Feeder Manager. it requires only two steps, first to set the blogs (settings) and when add blog (include in feeder) - dont forget to use excert and limit to let us say 150, the second in the home page add a feeder mgr and set the feeder url to the rss aggregator, sort and set maximum blogs such as 3 and blogs per page 3 - to see the latest 3 news (blogs). i actually did use the feedback to get the community have some comment on the reported news - news as source of debating and exchanging views.

good luck
