Ordering requires Registration, Why?

Hello,

In order to complete an order via the web store to purchase downloadable items, the user is forced to sign up. Why? From a business perspective this is actually VERY off-putting, specially if the user just wishes to download a single document.

Is there a way that the store can operate without forcing users to login?

If someone other than Joes could enlighten me I would be happy as I am sure Joe is inundated.

Many Many thanks :)

Re: Ordering requires Registration, Why?

Hi,

There are several reasons.

1. We need a way to be able to let the user get back to their purchase history to download again or get free upgrades. The easiest way to implement this is to have a site user attached to every order.

2. To use PayPal or Google checkout we have to send the user away from our site to a third party site for payment and we need a sure way of knowing whether the returning user is the same one we sent. The user has to come back to our site for download fulfillment and we want to secure our files and make sure only the same user can get the files.

Possibly there are other solutions to these problems but they are more complex and require a lot of work. For the moment I'm focusing my efforts on making WebStore do what I need it to do with the least development effort.

Also Amazon does require registration to purchase so I figure it can't be all wrong.

Best,

Joe

Re: Ordering requires Registration, Why?

So what is going on in a situation like on this site:

http://www.legal-and-law.co.uk/index.php

They process payments through paypal as well. If you go to that page, then click on "Click Here to Get Legal Advice", you fill in your details (and email address), click next to submit some text (your legal query) , click "Next step" and then you go right to choosing a card to pay (which is actually useless here, all the card image buttons just take us to paypal, where we have to again select what card we want to pay with)

How do you think they are working this method?

Many thanks.

Re: Ordering requires Registration, Why?

I can only speculate, but it seems their fulfillment process involves real people answering questions by email to those whose payment comes through. The paypal order includes the email and they match it against the email supplied with the question and respond to the customer by email.

If they were delivering their content as private web pages and only allowing paid users to see it they would have to make the user sign in.

What they are doing is not at all the same concept as a store for selling download products or shipped products as far as I can see. Its more like a contact form and a paypal button.

Best,

Joe

Re: Ordering requires Registration, Why?

a similar concept is implemented by dealextreme

customers can buy without register with the website; the order history is associated with the paypal email

so handy
