.less, artisteer and the new HTML5 skins.

Hi joe.
where are the two new skins you said are based on HTML5?
are they included in the default deployment download? or in extra skins?
(I also couldn't find the two in the demo.mojoportal)
what are their names?
they were not even downloadable in the new mojoHTML5 project.

sorry, I simply want to see them, and I'm having problems with it.

----------------

and something about the skins.
It's really good that you have started that new project, because we all know what a perfect solution mojoportal is, and how not having nice and beautiful skins hurts it. I wish we see good results soon.

and something about less and artisteer,
all the extra markup artisteer skins render, and now the new .less files, make creating skins based on them a job that I don't love that much. it makes a simple job a hard task!
I prefer to have simple skins and working based on them. currently I see nearly all default skins are based on artisteer.

for my new projects, I use some old skins that I have, and create new designs based on them. I'm starting to feel they are outdated now.
I need a nice, clean, but simple fresh skin to start my new designs from! maybe then I could create a nice skin for mojoportal.

Re: .less, artisteer and the new HTML5 skins.

You can download the new skins from the source code tab on the html 5 mojo project, they are also in the extraskins.zip on the mojoPortal codeplex page. They are not on the demo site because they are not pretty, they are meant as a starting point they are not finished designs. I only want to use finished designs on the demo site.

If you don't like Artisteer then don't use it

If you don't like .less then don't use it

There is no requirement to use those things, some people will like them a lot and some people won't.

The next version of Artisteer will also support HTML 5 and the markup is a little better in Artisteer in each version. We will also have a plugin for Artisteer 4 to directly export a mojoPortal skin which is going to make it a lot easier than in the past, so those people who do like Artisteer are going to like it even more soon.

Best,

Joe

Re: .less, artisteer and the new HTML5 skins.

thanks Joe.

my problem with them as I said is I simply want nice skins for start. but all the default skins are based on artisteer, and now that there are two HTML5 skins, they are based on external frameworks. ( I had assumed that only default skins are regularly updated, and the extra skins are not that important. maybe I was wrong)

I understand the hard  work you have done to support artisteer and I know how well you have done it. and I do understand that many people love it and benefit from it.

but I wanted a nice and simple skin to start from. I had though that those two skins depend on .less files. but I now see that there is a bootstrap skin without using .less files. thanks.

maybe we need even a simpler skin (for people like me to start from) that doesn't even depend on bootstrap.

Re: .less, artisteer and the new HTML5 skins.

The Artisteer skins we ship with mojoPortal are not really intended for modification, they are finished designs. To modify those designs we make the .artx files available so people can modify them in Artisteer and re-export. Artisteer doesn't provide support for modifying designs after exporting and I don't really offer support for that either, though some people do modify them outside of Artisteer. The skins in the extra skins download are probably a little better for modification (except for the older artisteer skins in the extra skins zip), but some of those designs are a bit out dated as well.

The main reason we include the Artisteer skins in the mojoPortal package is because they are needed by people who must choose one of them as the starting skin when exporting their own design from Artisteer. The choice must be made based on the criteria in the documentation in order to have the correct format in layout.master. Since the goal of Artisteer is to support the people who don't have as much knowledge of html and css we tried to keep it as simple as posisble for those users by including a set of Artisteer skins with each possible layout arrangement in layout.master.

However, once Artisteer 4 ships and we ship our plugin that exports a skin directly we will no longer really need to include a bunch of Artisteer skins in the mojoPortal package since they won't be needed for creating new skins as they are now.

My goal with the HTML 5 Skins project is to get some good designers to contribute some nice skins made from scratch (or from css frameworks of their own choosing) that would be nicer than the current batch of Artisteer skins. If we do get some nice designs we will begin to include those on the demo site and in the mojoPortal package and we will move the older artisteer skins into the extraskins.zip. The main point is that I am not a designer myself and the only way we are going to get some really good skins is to get some real designers involved. I can make a few ok designs in Artisteer but I would much rather have some good designers showcase their own work and share with the community.

Best,

Joe

Re: .less, artisteer and the new HTML5 skins.

ok.

I have three sites now which need new skins, and I'm going to start by the bootstrap without the .less files.

I wish I have enough time to contribute a nice skin to mojoPortal. thank you again Joe.
