A New Beginning It is an exciting day for the mojoPortal project! First, allow me to introduce myself. My name is Joe Davis. I am the Founder and President of i7MEDIA and a longtime supporter of mojoPortal. On Friday, February 3, 2017, I and Joe Audette, Founder of mojoPortal, completed an agreement for the sale of mojoPortal to i7MEDIA. This sale includes the open source project and the commercial modules available on the mojoPortal website from Joe Audette's company, Source Tree Solutions.

I have been using mojoPortal since 2008 and supporting it since 2009. I started my business in 2008 and set out to find a good content management system I could use to build websites for my customers. After a lot of trial and error, I came across mojoPortal and I was immediately drawn to its ease-of-use and friendly forum, fostered by Joe Audette. After 9 years of building sites with mojoPortal, contributing to the core, and providing support to my own clients and those around the world through the forums, I am thrilled that I, and my company, are able to ensure the further development of mojoPortal.

Rest assured mojoPortal will remain open source and there are no plans to change that. We (i7MEDIA) do, however, have plans for expanding mojoPortal to help it stay relevant and to provide the best .NET CMS platform on the market today.

You're sure to be wondering what Joe Audette has to say about all of this. Well, he is very enthusiastic about the new life of mojoPortal:

It gives me great satisfaction to know that I have created something that so many people have found useful and that it will continue to be used and supported by a top community member and his organization. Joe Davis and i7MEDIA have always been the most qualified consultants for mojoPortal other than myself, and I've always had great confidence in referring customers and projects to them over the years. Joe Davis has been a good friend and has been my go to guy when I needed to refer a customer or project that I did not have the capacity for. Whether you need design help, hosting, or custom feature development, i7MEDIA is the team you want with years of experience. mojoPortal was my baby for over a decade, and my baby is in good hands! Long live mojoPortal!

Joe Audette, mojoPortal Founder

What's Changing?

Basic Stuff

At first, we're going to focus on changing small things that will save site owners and site builders time. Some of these items are:

  • Ensuring that settings are logically organized and labeled properly.
  • Removing unnecessary markup (empty divs, excessive <br> elements, etc…).
  • Consolidating DB scripts.

Developer Support

Development of add-ons for mojoPortal isn't necessarily hard but there is a bit of a learning curve and quite a few steps one must take to prepare a working development environment. Our focus will be on cutting down on the number of steps and making the process easier overall. We will also explore possible MVC and WebApi implementations of some features, especially administration features like the File Manager.

Additionally, we want to engage with the developers already using mojoPortal to get them contributing code to the project. GitHub provides a very simple mechanism for generating pull requests so if you have code you would like to contribute, we would be very grateful.

Beautiful Design

It has always been possible to create beautiful sites with mojoPortal but the built-in skins were not good examples. We're fixing that and we're committed to making sure that mojoPortal is seen as a designer-friendly CMS. To make that happen, we're going to implement some new functionality which will allow UI developers to include options for site owners to control various aspects of their skin.

Documentation Audit

mojoPortal is a fairly well-documented system but there is a lot of stuff that is just not needed anymore, other things have changed, and there's a lot that isn't documented.

Commercial Add-On Pricing and Licensing

We're working on the licensing and pricing for the commercial add-ons. Some of them are going to be released as open source and others will see their prices change. The server licenses are back and are generally at a lower price than before. To see the new pricing, take a look at the store (we've renamed the page "Add-Ons" because in the near future we're going to have a marketplace so others can sell or list their own add-ons).

Licensing has changed for all commercial add-ons with regard to updates. Now, each purchase of an add-on will give the purchaser a year of updates to that add-on. If you purchase Form Wizard Pro on February 5, 2017, you can continue to download updates to the module through February 5, 2018.

When's the Next Update?

We expect to release a new version in the next couple of weeks with several small fixes, a few clean bootstrap-based skins, and a brand-new file manager to replace both of the current file managers and the link and image picker used in the WYSIWYG editors. That's right, one file manager that does it all.

We Need Your Help

We purchased mojoPortal and we're committed to it being a success, again. We will need your help to make this happen. If you would like to help with documentation, let us know. If you would like to contribute code, check out how easy it is to submit a pull request. If you would like to help others looking for help, subscribe to the forums.

Here's to the Future of mojo!

I am very excited about the future of mojoPortal. We soft-launched the mojoPortal website over this past weekend and I have already received a few inquiries about what's going on and some messages of support. Thank you for taking the time to read this post. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them in the forums or send us an email.

The voting phase is open from now until October 31, 2001, then the judges weigh in and the final winners will be announced on November 7, 2011. mojoPortal.com Gets a New Look! I've just updated this site to use a new skin designed by Joe Davis of http://i7media.net/i7MEDIA. I wasn't really dissatisfied with the previous design in general, it was pretty decent and in some ways it makes me a little sad to change from what had become so familiar to me. But the new design seems very clean and there is a lot of attention to detail that really looks professional and I think in some cases the new design improves the usability of the site.

The menu structure is very nice and one of the most striking elements of the design. But the usability improvements are the result of making things stand out more. For example people hardly seemed to notice the forum descriptions and posting guidelines in the old design. It is right there on the page but somehow it often goes un-noticed because it doesn't grab your attention, so the result is that people often post questions in the wrong forum or leave out information that is expected to be included. With the new design, the forum description/instructions really stand out and I anticipate it will be noticed better than with the old design. Notice also the nice attention to detail for the pager link styles.

New Design Forums

Old Design Forums

Similarly, on our search page there has always been a little help link that people could click to learn how to do more advanced searching, but in the old design hardly anyone ever noticed it. Whereas again in the new design it really jumps out and I anticipate more people will click the help link and will have better luck searching once they know the tips from the help.

A huge thanks goes out to Joe Davis for his hard work on this design! Joe is also working on a variation on this design but with a different color scheme that we will ship with a future release of mojoPortal.

What do you think? Do you like the new design better than the old one?

Please also let us know if you notice any pages on this site that don't look right with the new design, we are still tweaking a few things here and there.

The fix for the ASP.NET Security Bug is now available on Windows Update The fix for the ASP.NET  security bug is now available in windows update. However, the change has a negative side effect for the current release of mojoPortal which may cause authenticated users to experience an error on your site. The error occurs when trying to decrypt the role cookie which was encrypted before the update was applied. Previously, if there was an error decrypting a role cookie, it was throwing a System.Security.Cryptography.CrypotgraphicException (which we were handling so the user would not experience any error). After the windows update it now throws a more generic HttpException which the current release does not handle so the user will see the error page, and the only way to solve it is to clear the cookie. I have added handling for the changed error for the next release of mojoPortal, but you may begin seeing this error after you or your host applies the security fix.

There is one workaround you can do right away to solve this problem, you can add code to the ErrorPage.aspx in the root to clear the role cookie so that at least the user will only see the error page one time. To do this, edit the ErrorPage.aspx file with a text editor. At the top add this:

<%@ Import Namespace="mojoPortal.Business" %>
<%@ Import Namespace="mojoPortal.Business.WebHelpers" %>
<%@ Import Namespace="mojoPortal.Web" %>

then add this code to the bottom of the Page_Load event:

after this existing line of code:

if (disposable != null) { disposable.Dispose(); }

add this:

try
        {
            SiteSettings siteSettings = CacheHelper.GetCurrentSiteSettings();
            if (siteSettings != null)
            {
                string roleCookieName = SiteUtils.GetRoleCookieName(siteSettings);
                HttpCookie roleCookie = new HttpCookie(roleCookieName, string.Empty);
                roleCookie.HttpOnly = true;
                roleCookie.Path = "/";
                HttpContext.Current.Response.Cookies.Add(roleCookie);
            }
        }
        catch{}

mojoPortal Wins 3rd Place in 2009 CMS Awards I'm very gratified to announce that mojoPortal has won 3rd place in the 2009 CMS Awards by Packt Publishing, in the Non-PHP category. It is particularly exciting that mojoPortal was the only .NET based CMS to place this year, nudging out DotNetNuke in the Best Other category.

CMS Award 2009

Plone, a Python based CMS retained their crown from last year, and dotCMS, a java based CMS took second place.

In 2007, the first year of the contest, mojoPortal actually won this category over the more established Plone, but we were the only .NET CMS among the contenders that year. In 2008 there were several other .NET projects in the mix and though we were a finalist in the Best Other category, DotNetNuke took 3rd place both in the Best Other and Best Overall Category. This year, after the nomination phase, DotNetNuke was a finalist again in both the Best Overall and Best Other categories and mojoPortal only made the finalists in the Best Other Category, so it seemed like they had already placed ahead of us again this year, but in the end we prevailed against the odds.

It is a very competitive field and all the contending projects certainly deserve respect. While some have criticized the contest as being merely a popularity contest, I can't really say it seems that way to me. While mojoPortal's popularity is growing rapidly, we are still much less known than many of the projects in the competition. Certainly we were an underdog and no-where near as popular as Plone in 2007 when we won first place in the non-PHP category, and DotNetNuke clearly has a much larger user base, better brand recognition, and more marketing muscle backed by venture capital. So obviously there is more than vote counting going on. It would be nice if the judges post their individual analysis, at least one has already posted some notes about his impressions of the contenders and I know some of the other judges are planning to do the same.

mojo Rising! Got To Keep On Rising Thought I would make a brief post to share the progress in growth of the mojoPortal community and other statistics and milestones of interest.

In recent weeks we reached 5000 commits in our svn source code repository, actually the most recent revision as of this writing is r5086.

We are approaching 5000 voluntary site registrations and could possibly even reach that milestone this month. The chart below is as of 2009-05-09.

graph of site registrations

Web Traffic is doing well and showing steady growth.

web traffic chart

And best of all, downloads have suddenly gone way up from the exposure we have received in the Microsoft Web Application Gallery. You can see, we went live in the gallery on April 6-7 and its been like a tidal wave raisin our 30 day downloads from 3500-3800 previous average to over 18,000  downloads on the current live stats chart.

download chart as of 4-22-2009

download chart as of 5-2-2009

A little love from Microsoft goes a long way as you can see! Huge thanks to Microsoft and especially the IIS Team for their support and help in getting mojoPortal into the gallery.

The interesting thing to me is that the site registration chart was already going parabolic before we got into the gallery. We got into the gallery around April 6-7, and site registration actually dipped a little in April compared to March. It will be interesting to see where it goes from here. Note that we have never required registration to download or even tried to fool people into thinking they can't download without registration like DotNetNuke does. Our registration numbers mean more because they are strictly voluntary.

A New Alternate Demo Site Hosted by OpenSourceCMS.com If you've been involved in the open source content management world for while, you've probably come accross OpenSourceCMS.com before. For a long time they have hosted demos of all the popular open source PHP CMS and web applications. Its kind of a one stop shopping place where you can test drive a lot of different CMS and web applications without having to install them yourself. I've always wished mojoPortal could be on their list but since they were only doing PHP it wasn't possible. But now they are tackling ASP.NET demos to bring the same convenience for trying ASP.NET web applications without having to install it yourself. Happily, mojoPortal is now on there as well as quite a few other popular ASP.NET content management systems and blogs. I still encourage you to use our demo site but sometimes it can get a little out of whack with lots of people using it so its good having another alternative demo site available.

Congratulations to Scott Goodwin and Mark King on the launch of their new ASP.NET demo site, I hope it does as well as their PHP demos have.

mojoPortal.com Makeover With all the nice looking new skins from my recent skinning campaign, I decided it was time to give mojoPortal.com a makeover. The previous design was about 2 years old and was starting to look a little dated. I also wanted to reduce the clutter on the home page and try to have a more succinct marketing message. I think in the past I've thought that most of my audience were developers so I was packing in a lot of technical information on the home page, but over time I've come to realize I should be targeting more towards business people and emphasizing the business value of mojoPortal more than the technical merits, at least on the home page. So I hope you like the new look!

mojoPortal Wins Best Non-PHP Open Source CMS

Huge thanks to our community and the judges and the good folks at Packt Publishing for honoring us with this award!

We appreciate the recognition and the additional attention the project has received by participating in this contest and are very pleased to have won our category.

Now we can introduce mojoPortal as "The Award Winning Content Management System, mojoPortal" ;-) I'm sure I'll be very obnoxious saying this at every opportunity!

America Recycles Day Site Goes Live with mojoPortal The National Recycling Coalition has just gone live with a new sub site for America Recycles Day, which is coming up on November 15.

I was fortunate enough to work on the project with the good folks at DDB Seattle. They did all the design work and my job was achieving their design in mojoPortal and building a couple of custom features like the Take The Pledge and Pass on The Pledge pages. Its nice to be involved in such a good cause. Recycling is something where each of us can make a difference with just a little effort and America Recycles Day is a good time to take a moment and commit to stepping up our efforts to recycle on an individual basis.

Achieving the Single Sign On Dream with Open ID and Windows Live ID I've just updated this site with the very latest code and have enabled authentication with Open ID and also with Windows Live ID. It is now possible to register or sign in to this site using either of these services.

Tip: If you are already a registered user of the site and you want to associate your Open ID with your existing site account you can do so on the My Profile page after you login with your current credentials.

For those interested, a good place to get a free Open ID account is at MyOpenID.com.

I really think single sign on is a huge thing the web has needed for a long time. I hope it catches on so I can use the same password at most sites. Now mojoPortal makes it easy to setup sites that support these single sign on services.

The code has already landed in svn in my sandbox and I will be merging it to trunk in the next few hours. Any testing would be appreciated. I would like to make a new release with these features very soon.

Please Nominate mojoPortal Hey friends and supporters of mojoPortal, there's only one week left so if you haven't already please take a moment to nominate mojoPortal for the 2007 Open Source CMS Award by PackT Publishing.

It will take a lot of nominations even to get accepted into the contest so every vote counts. We are competing against projects with much larger user bases and much larger communities so mojoPortal is kind of an underdog. If we don't get enough nominations we won't even be in the contest.

There are 3 categories in which to nominate mojoPortal:

Overall Winner, Open Source CMS Award

Most Promising Open Source Content Management System

Best Other (non PHP) Open Source Content Management System

Please nominate mojoPortal in all 3 of these. Nominations are allowed through August 31, 2007

mojoPortal mentioned at Mix07 Open Source Panel Discussion I got an email the other day from Stephen Jazdzewski, a mojoPortal user running his site on Mono

He attended the Mix07 conference and mentioned mojoPortal in the QA session at the end of the Panel Discussion: Open Source Applications Using the .NET Platform.

The presentation is now online here. You can hear mojoPortal mentioned at about the 50:09 time reference.

Thanks a lot Stephen!, its great to get a little exposure at such an important event.

The National Recycling Coalition Goes Live With mojoPortal The National Recycling Coalition (NRC) recently revamped their web site using mojoPortal.

The project was managed by DDB Seattle, which is part of DDB Worldwide Communications Group.

I helped with the project as a consultant, providing some help with skinning and custom feature development.

"The NRC represents every sector of the waste reduction field including local recycling coordinators, corporate environmental managers, state and federal regulators, environmental educators and advocates, and waste management professionals. NRC's objective is to eliminate waste and promote sustainable economies through advancing sound management practices for raw materials in North America."

Its very exciting to know that mojoPortal can play a small part in such an important cause as Recycling. It was also a pleasure working with the good folks at DDB Seattle, I hope to have an opportunity to collaborate with them on other projects in the future. They are true professionals.

A Couple of Interesting new mojoPortal Sites Just a quick post to mention a couple of new mojoPortal sites.

The first is Living In The Boro, a site I helped setup for my good friend Julie Fischer. I've known Julie and her husband Bill for many years so it was natural that I picked Julie to help sell my house in Tennessee when I decided to move to Charlotte, NC. She did an awesome job and I recommend her to anyone that needs a real estate agent in Middle Tennessee. Julie also does pottery, so please check out her pottery site.

The second is a nice tourist information site for Reunion Island, man I want to go there someday!

I always add sites I know about to the mojo Sites page, but I don't find out about all of them, if you know of any more please let me know.

Localization Documentation Updated I've just updated the documentation about localizing mojoPortal

http://www.mojoportal.com/localization.aspx

I'm renewing my push to improve documentation as I believe this is critical to improving the popularity of mojoPortal, which in turn is crucial for my business plan and trying to make a living working on mojoPortal.

Right now my top priorities are documentation and preparing for a new release with the recently completed extensible User Profile system.

The e-Commerce Solution project is temporarily on hold for now because the deadline has been pushed out by the one sponsor I have for this project and because the project is currently under funded and therefore not as high on my priority list.

Currently I have one sponsor pledging $1000 for this feature. I would really like to find some additional sponsors to make it worthwhile for me to work on the e-commerce feature so if you are interested in this feature and have any funds in your budget, please consider sponsoring this project. Please contact me if you are interested.

Essex Biodiversity Project a new mojoPortal Site A new site for The Essex Biodiversity Project is now online and using mojoPortal.

Harvey Watts did a great job with the site. Its very nice to see mojoPortal used for important work like environmental protection and preservation.

Update 11/2/2006 7:23 PM EDT

A quote from Harvey Watts of Hickory Hollow the company that implemented the Essex Biodiversity Project site:

"Several of us worked on it from Hickory Hollow
(http://www.hickoryhollow.co.uk - this needs to be a mojoportal!) and
the site owners Gen and Mark who run the Essex Biodiversity Project.
That is the neat thing about mojoportal it allows end users to populate
the content of the site without too much assistance from techies."

This illustrates some of the benefits of a content management system like mojoPortal, you don't need to ask a developer when you need new pages on your site. Once the developer sets it up for you content authors can do the rest right from the browser.

Novell Forge issues I noticed this morning that the Subversion (aka svn) repository is down and just now noticed that the downloads at Novell Forge are also down.

This is preventing any downloads or svn checkouts at the moment, sorry for any inconvenience. I'm not sure how long it will be down but I do know they are aware of it and working on the problem.

I'll post again once I know its back up and running.

Joe

Update 10/28/2006 9:07 PM The file downloads on Novell Forge are working again but svn is still down

Update 11/2/2006 svn is now working but only for those with commit access using ssh, hopefully anonymous https access will be working again sometime today.  Here are the ssh instructions but this only works for those with commit access:
Generate a key pair for your Novell Forge login as indicated in the instructions here

then upload your public key
http://developer.novell.com/wiki/index.php/Special:Keyupload

then configure your plink path in tortoise using the -i pathtoyourkey and it should work.
From the File Menu in Windows Explorer I went to TortoiseSVN > Settings, click on Network node

In the SSH Client setting I had
C:\Program Files\TortoiseSVN\bin\TortoisePlink.exe
but after changing it to
C:\Program Files\TortoiseSVN\bin\TortoisePlink.exe -i C:\pathtomyprivatekey.ppk

2 Years of Development Just a quick post to mark a chronological milestone.

It was August of 2004 when I began work on mojoPortal so this month marks 2 years of development. Of course this has been 2 years of only nights and weekends since I have been working full time doing other development during that period.  Coming up on November 1, will mark 2 years since the first release.

Its been a lot of work but also a lot of fun. I think the next 2 years will be even better. Since January most of the work has been re-architecting to take advantage of 2.0 .NET but now we are past that and I am focusing on feature additions and improvements to existing features to take it to the next level.  I was excited when I started the project but I'm even more excited now. The project is being used by people and companies all over the world and interest in the project is building momentum. Its very rewarding to work on something and to see it become popular.

So thanks to all who have contributed in large and small ways and those who have downloaded and are using mojoPortal and those who have helped spread the word about this project!

This Site Is Running the latest code I just updated this site to the latest 2.1.1 from svn for final testing before the release this weekend.

This release will include the new localization model which detects the browser language and uses resource for that language if available. So anyone visiting this site using one of the languages we currently have translations for should see the labels and buttons in their own language.

Currently mojoPortal is tranlated into:
English
Spanish-Mex
German
Dutch
Turkish
Russian
Czech
Italian
Portuguese (Brazil)

So if you set your browser language to one of those you should see the labels and buttons change to those languages on this site.

Also this release features a new help system making it easy to add contextual help links anywhere in a page or module with an editing system to make it easy to update or translate the help files.

The Image Gallery also uses a new modal dialog to show images. I've added an image gallery to the MyPage page, click one of the thumbnails there to see how cool the new modal dialog is. The same dialog is also used in the help system.

This will be an easy upgrade as there are no changes to db tables. Users of MS SQL and PostgreSQL will need to run the stored procedure scripts to get the latest procedures.

Access/shortcut keys for all important buttons is another new feature this release. It can be disabled from the web.config file if you don't like it but its pretty convenient not having to grab the mouse for everything.

This release will also be able to run in Medium trust hosting environments.

mojoportal NOT Tested in Comparison of ASP.NET CMS Noticed quite a few links in the logs coming from this article.

article no longer online

Its in German but I used google to tranlsate it, its a review of ASP.NET CMS solutions. mojoPortal, Cuyahoga and OmniPortal were all eliminated from the review because the author had difficulty with installation.

Its not a very elaborate test/comparison from what I can tell, no load testing or anything like that just one persons first reaction in terms of features and usability.

And no surprise DotNetNuke comes out on top. Its a shame to lose a comparison by not being compared. I have tried to make mojoPortal easy to install, I have helped a few people with installation in the forums but really not many problems reported in relation to the number of downloads. Is it fair to conclude from this article that mojoportal is hard to install or could it be that the author didn't put in much effort and didn't follow the instructions? Maybe a little of both?

What do you think? Is mojoPortal dificult to install and if so what could we do to make it easier? As a developer and thinking that the target audience is mostly developers I've always preferred x-copy deployment but maybe for windows I should provide a Windows installer?

CSS Control Adapters, Site Upgrade and more.. I just updated this site to the latest code from my sandbox in svn (/branches/joedev2.1). Hopefully you won't notice much difference. The menu is now rendering as ul and li elements using the new CSS Menu Adapter based on the sample from MS. It should look the same as ever in the browser but if you view the source you'll see no more of the nasty nested tables that the menu rendered as previously.

Also the Personalization, Membership, and Roles provider apis have been implemented in all the data layers (this site is using the MySQL data layer).

I'm also using the built in asp.net login control, change password control, and password recovery control which run on top of the Membership Provider.

Personalization in particular is the main plumbing needed to support WebParts and it is working well now in all the data layers so I'm beginning to experiment with web parts and conversion of the built in features to web parts. Its going to be cool. The only thing is the web parts controls all seem to render with nested table layouts so I will probably have to implement CSS Adapters for them before I'm happy with it.

There were quite a few changes under the hood so let me know if you notice any problems or anomolies with this site

more 2.0 progress and hosting change I have been making major progress in the 2.1 branch and am happy to report that this site is now running on a build from the 2.1 svn branch and using these new 2.0 .NET features:

  • MasterPages, in place of Paul Wilson's MasterPages we used in 1.x
  • Themes (a very powerfull way to to control the look of server controls) I have put skeleton settings for all the major server controls in the theme.skin files so you can easily see and edit the wide range of properties available for each control.
  • ASP.NET Menu control, you will be able to use this, or TreeView or skmMenu
  • a custom SiteMapProvider
  • some conversion to the new configuration api but still more to convert

After running on mono for over a year, mostly at grokthis.net, it is with mixed feelings that I have moved for the time being back to windows hosting provided by Trendoid Internet Services.

While running this site on mono is a primary goal for the project, running on the latest version of mojoPortal software is even more important and to do that I need a 2.0 .NET environment. This is after all how I do testing, I run it on my sites before I make a release, you know, eating the dogfood and all that. I will be continually testing on mono and as soon as its possible to run with stability on the 2.0 mono stack this site will be moved back to mono hosting.

We will of course continue to support the 1.x branch of mojoPortal for mono users until the 2.0 stack is ready

I've started a page to list hosting companies that are hosting mojoPortal sites
http://www.mojoportal.com/hosting.aspx

I can personally recommend the ones listed there now. If you know of any more that you recommend let me know and I'll add them to the list.

Next up is work on a custom Providers for Personalization and Membership. After those are in place I can start to explore conversion to WebParts

FYI Scheduled Downtime for this site Dear GrokThis.net Customer,

We will be upgrading the treebeard server on Sunday, October 9th,
between the hours of 12am and 4am (EST) to perform hardware maintenance and
software updates. The server should be down for a period of
approximately one (1) hour. We will be adding an additional gigabyte of memory to
this server, resulting in more responsive webpages and more reliable
services.

We apologize for the short notice, but we believe it is best to have
these updates applied quickly.

Release 20050829 A new release of mojoPortal is now available on the download page.

New this release is the inclusion of NeatUpload by Dean Brettle. NeatUpload, licensed under the LGPL, is an ASP.NET HttpModule for handling file uploads gracefully with a progress bar. It works on Windows with IIS or on Linux/Mac OS X with mono using XSP web server or using mod_mono with apache web server. Pretty sweet! Dean developed this specifically for mojoPortal but I'm sure it will be used in countless ASP.NET projects once the word gets out about it.  I really can't imagine an ASP.NET developer that won't want to use it. Previously, mojoPortal shipped with SlickUpload which was disabled by default because it only works on Windows. A similar commercial control ABCUpload I've used before also does not, as far as I know, work under mono. Great work Dean!
Here's a screenshot of the progress bar in action:

you can even stop the upload midstream by clicking the icon.

Also new  is the final release of version 2.0 of FCKEditor, previously we were using RC1.

Thanks to Tom Opgenorth for adding a small enhancement to the Links Module to enable specifying the target. He is currently working on adding categories to the Links module allowing you to organize links in a TreeView by category. That will be a cool option. After that project Tom is planning on implementing a new image gallery using nGallery.

mojoPortal now includes, in addition to US English, culture files for Italian, Portuguese, and Czech.  If anyone transaltes to additional languages, please send me the translated files.

100 Registered Users
of course there are a lot more people visiting the site and downloading both the code and the release files, it seems that most people won't register if they can help it. I must admit I'm the same way, it takes a lot for me to register at a site. I guess its because we fear the possibility of an onslaught of spam. But I assure you if you register at mojoportal.com you won't get any spam from me at least until we get the Newsletter module built! But seriously it, even that will be an infrequent thing with an easy opt out on your profile page or from within any email newsletter that we have in the future. So come on if you haven't already, register and show you appreciate mojoportal.

In case you are interested, here is how we are doing in terms of traffic.

February was only half a month of data, before that the site was running on a Windows server but in the middle of February I moved the site to a Linux server with mono.

mojoPortal is coming up on a year of development time this month and 1 year since the first release in November.
Of course I only get to work on it mostly on weekends and some evenings. I do have a full time job separate from mojoPortal

mono Live CD! I'm very happy to report that mojoPortal is included on the new mono-live cd! This new bootable cd should make it easy for more people to take mono out for a test drive. It has the MonoDevelop IDE, mono documentation, tutorials, and a number of good applications that run on mono including mojoPortal.  There's also Beagle, the cool new desktop search tool, F-Spot an awesome photo management tool, and a neat little note taking app called TomBoy. Pretty sweet! I'm downloading my copy now.

Another cool thing to notice is that the www.mono-live.com web site is also running on mojoPortal!

Running on the new server mojoPortal.com is now running on a new server hosted by GrokThis.net. I highly recommend them.  The level of customer support in getting my sites setup was outstanding.

It seems like a small operation but sometimes its better to shop at a boutique than at Walmart.  They specialize in customized configuration to meet your needs and my impression is that they know what they are doing and are very responsive on support.  I've been very pleased with the service.

For $14.95/month I get :

  • ssh access
  • my own instance of apache that I can start and stop as needed which is nice when you are updating a site running on mono.
  • mono 1.1.7
  • ssl
  • smtp
  • awstats
  • 2 databases (I got 1 each of MySQL and PostgreSQL)
  • 5 domains
  • unlimited hosts within a domain
  • 384 MB disk space
  • 15 Gigs of monthly transfer

You really should check their site for more packages and features, I'm only listing the ones I'm using.

Right now I'm only using the MySQL db, using mojoPortal, I am running both mojoportal.com and joeaudette.com from the same web folder and using the same db.

I'm going to setup some other sites and my demo site using the PostgreSQL db. At the moment the demo sites are still running on the old server.

I have to also mention another hosting company that provides Windows hosting.

SeekDotNet hosting company is also the provider of a free open source ASP.NET file manager that is used in mojoportal.  Since all the page says is "Free and Open Source", I emailed them just to make sure it was ok to distribute the file manager with mojoportal.  They were very gracious, they gave me permission and also offered me sponsored hosting for mojoportal. Sponsored hosting is very generous offer that I appreciated wholeheartedly but nevertheless declined, hope it didn't offend them, but I feel it is very important for mojoPortal.com to be running on mono.  That is after all one of the most important features that mojoPortal has to offer. Of couse mojoPortal can run on Windows and for those who would like Windows hosting, I do recommend you checkout SeekDotNet, they do have some of the best package prices I've seen anywhere and they seem like very nice folk.

alpha release coming soon I'm targeting November 1, 2004 for a first release of code that I will call an alpha release. I really would have liked to have a few more features before making a release but I think I will have the forums ready by then and thats a pretty big feature made up of a lot of small to medium features. I had to extend the properties of the user to include the expected things like avatars, instant message addresses, web sites, number of forum posts, etc. A member list is also important. I don't think I will have the private message system ready for the alpha but that is in the works.

Part of the reason I'm eager to get a release out is that there is now a free hosting site for ASP.NET under mono/GNU Linux at www.monoForge.com and they specifically support using MySQL, giving you a free MySQL database. Its free during the beta period which lasts at least till Q3 2005 depending on the progress of mono. After that they are suggesting it will be cheap for the beta users to continue, perhaps $5 per month. I think this is good news for mojoPortal. All of the ASP.NET projects currently listed at the gotmono.com web site only work with Postgre SQL and to my knowledge mojoPortal is the going to be the first one with support for MySQL. So hopefully with the new free hosting available it will encourage people to try mojoPortal. I've already registered there and connected to my MySQL database last night using SQLyog. I was able to copy the whole database from my local linux box to my database at monoForge in just a few minutes. Of course SQLyog is a windows program so I was doing it from a windows box. This site is running on a windows server but using MySQL from a Fedora Core 2 machine. I also have a copy of this site running on the Fedora machine but it is only exposed to my local network. The site works great there running under mono 1.0. I'm excited to be able to test it on the internet with a linux web server using my monoForge site under mono 1.0.2. I'll post again when its up and running there.

New Skin This skin only took about 20 minutes to create. When I have time I'll do something more elaborate. For the moment I'm much more focused on functionality than making it pretty. I envision being able to create tools within the site that will allow creation of skins using the web browser. Other features need to be done first. I'd like to have the photo gallery and forums modules ready before I make a release, particularly the forums because then if people find bugs they can post to the forum instead of sending me an e-mail and I can avoid having to answer the same questions to multiple users.

The IBuySpy Skin Well the site skinning is essentially complete. From the Admin page you can select from available skins. This is the IBuySpy skin. I plan to make some new skins soon but it tickles me that I was able to make all the changes I made without losing the original look. I really can't think of any limits on the design possibilities with the new skinning. The skmMenu fits right in nicely and has its own skinning that integrates easily. I also created a MetaContent control and setup the abilility to specify default meta content at the site level and over-ride it at the page level if desired. Now its easy to move the menu around and change it from horizontal to vertical within the skin template. I still need to implement the page hierarchy for sub menu items. I also got about 80% of the culture localization support completed. The goal is for no hard coded labels in the site. All labels get their content from a Culture.config file. I'm providing a CultureUSA.config file and hoping that as others convert to their own cultures they will contribute additional Culture.config files that I can provide with the downloads.

Progress on Skinning After several hours of tedious find and replace chores to rename some entities in the project I decided to work on the skinning features. In my thinking it breaks down into selectable layout templates, selectable style sheets, and selectable image sets. I think you also have to make the site header control skinnable under its own settings and make it configurable so that you can turn off the top menu if you plan to use a vertical menu on the left side.
So far today I have the page layouts on some of the pages including this one implemented using Paul Wilson's MasterPages. Now that I've figured out how to integrate it, its just mechanical work to do the other pages. The template is not selectable yet but I plan to implement that soon. Amazing how much work I did this weekend and the site doesn't look any different!

Exciting New Era As I recall, the IBuySpy Portal reference architecture was released while Visual Studio.NET was in beta and was the first good sample code to help Classic ASP developers make the leap to this new .NET thing. It was later updated for the release and has been used as a starting point in countless private projects and at least 2 notable open source projects, RainbowPortal and DotNetNuke

A lot has happened since then. The .NET Community has blossomed into a wealth of sites with articles, code samples, forums, blogs, and open source projects. Now we have the approaching release of ASP.NET 2.0 and the first release of The Mono Project, a port of the .NET framework that runs on Unix, Linux, and Mac OS X. These are exciting times! The vision of cross platform applications is within reach!

But its not a slam dunk. Chances are the ASP.NET code you've already written will need some massaging to make it work in the case sensitive file and url world of GNU/Linux/Apache. You will also have to add some new skills to your repetoire to learn web server administration in the apache world. My plan with this project is to use what I've learned over the past several years of ASP.NET development and create an improved reference architecture that teaches Object Oriented implementation by example while at the same time fleshing out a truly cross platform, feature rich web site framework that can be used by others as a starting point for their projects as well as my own. When I complete my vision, there won't be much resemblence to the original IBuySpy architecture, but even today it makes a good starting point in terms of functionality.
