Well, If you're looking for an alternative to MojoPortal, several user-friendly CMS options are available. WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, Wix, and Squarespace are popular choices, offering different customization features and levels. It's essential to assess your specific requirements and consider factors such as ease of use, available templates and plugins, community support, and the type of website you want to build. Exploring demos or free versions of these platforms can help you determine which one best suits your needs and your users' preferences.

I hope you are clear now.

Thanks

Re: Alternate Recommendations Hello all,

You will find a new release on GitHub. We haven't created a blog post yet. Please let us know if you run into trouble.

Re: Alternate Recommendations I was thinking the same thing but the GitHub Repository for mojoPortal seems to be fairly busy. I wouldn't discount mojoPortal just yet. It has a very useful toolset and can be skinned very well. I was able to download the repo and build a new version (2.8.0.7) fairly easily. The only problem I have is updated code for the commercial modules.

Alternate Recommendations I suspect this question is going to fall on deaf no ears, however now that it is clear that mojoPortal has been abandoned – nearly five years since the last release – what do people recommend as an alternative that would be easy for my users to get to grips with?

Re: Page Description Stopped Being Reported for SEO Hey Joe,

     Happy New Year, and thanks for all you guys do.

     As suggested, I looked at the source and, just as you suggested, the meta description is reflecting accurately.  I made an assumption based on the Google crawler results; my apologies.

     It seems the SERP is reflecting the bots interpretation now instead of what has been supplied.  This page has recently went through a 301 Redirect; I'm wondering now if it's related to the switch.  For the purposes of a quick solution, I'll attempt to separate the single page into two concepts, remove the 301, and create another page reflecting the alternate page name.   I'll report back and let you know if it changes.

      I've left a link to an example page below.  Thank you again.

Re: Page Description Stopped Being Reported for SEO Hello,

Have you checked the source of the rendered page to see what the meta description is?

It is working on sites we manage.

Feel free to send us a link to one of your pages so we can look at it.

Thanks,
Joe

Page Description Stopped Being Reported for SEO As the title suggests, the 'Page Description' input box found on the 'Meta Settings' tab of the Page Settings view doesn't translate the the actual page description.  The crawlers are determining a description based on the first paragraph of the page and guessing.

Am I missing a setting?

Thanks.

Re: New version coming soon? The Scout Skin is awesome - but do you intend to add a few more skins in the next version - indeed can you sell a skin or two?

What would be outstanding, Joe, is a text search and REPLACE feature.  This would be a great function because we could Re-Brand a clients site much quicker.

I would be happy to test run the next version.

Thank You

Re: New version coming soon? Hey Crispin,

We are testing a release, will be out this month. I've said similar things in the past but keep getting caught up by paying projects.

Some of the features of the new version are:

  • Bad Word List - Implemented on the site level, allows site owner to create a list of words and phrases that should not be allowed in posts. This release will have it implemented in the Contact Form. We'll add it to the Forum and the Pro features after this release.
  • hCaptcha Support - Changes to reCaptcha to allow for swapping with hCaptcha (an alternative to Google's reCAPTCHA with full feature parity).
  • SSL enforced on all pages when SSL is enabled.
  • Added Map option to built-in Event Calendar .
  • ViewRoles and EditRoles added SuperFlexi items
  • "Restart App" button in System Information - allows restarting the application pool from the website.
  • Added update check to System Information - will ping mojo website service to see if an update is available
  • Removed mojo version from csshandler.ashx url by default. Setup now updates SkinVersionGuid.
  • Using Razor for Admin Menus, Newsletter Admin, and MemberList so these pages can be easily changed by the skin.
  • Added DisplayName to Roles
  • Added Search to RedirectList
  • Added CoreDisplaySettings control to move some web.config options to the skin.
  • Lots of small bug fixes.

I can send you a beta of the MSSQL version now, if you like.

Thanks,
Joe

New version coming soon? Hi Joe and team, just wondering whether there's a new version imminent? We have a client on an old version of mojoPortal and we'd like to get them up to date, but might hold off if a newer version than 2.7.0.0 is coming.

Re: Calendar Pro Color Picker Hi,

I'm finishing up a lot of changes to the calendar pro module. We'll have all new recurrence options, categories (with colors), individual event color picker, event email notifications, and new date pickers as well.

I really hope to have things finished and released next week.

Thanks,

Re: Performance and taking time to load the website Try these tips and see if it will optimize your js files,  first is order in which elements are loaded, it’s important that all elements in the <head> section are pre-loaded, before the visitor sees anything in browser, then all subsequent elements are ordered to load in a logical way. Next is Minify JavaScript code for smaller file sizes. Minifying code is different from obfuscating code, but both are methods of transforming JavaScript—to be more difficult to read, or to make it smaller. Minification accomplishes the latter, and can shrink file sizes to decrease page load times. Next is to optimize it! Optimization is a special type of JavaScript minification. These kind of minimizers not only delete unuseful white spaces, commas, comments etc. but also help to avoid ‘dead code’

Demo site I don't think the demo site is resetting. I have waited over an hour and it still has a page that someone created. I remember the site having a picture banner on the home page that is no longer there.

I'm in Australia so on the opposite time zone to USA.

Could you please let me know if the way it looks now is the norm?

Kind regards

Re: Meta Tag Properties Joe,

     Thanks for looking into it.  I attempted to follow the documentation here, but with 'Name' and 'Content' being shown in the example, when I was presented with double the options for Content and Name in the 'wild', I didn't understand the application.  I'm still not sure I understand, as ridiculous as that sounds; it could be that I still don't know enough about meta tags.  I understand your classic 'foo-bar' example.  To use an actual example, setting the author would be:

  • Content Property = author
  • Content = John Doe

     ...it appears the 'Content Property' field in the current build have taken the place of the 'Name' field in the example... is that right?

     What I'm not understanding is where the similar 'Name Property' and 'Name' come into play then; what are the purposes of those fields if the Content fields handle it?  Is the difference the meta object vs a page property?  That's all I can put together based on what I'm reading.

     Regarding the bug and the proposed changes... I think that sounds like a good idea assuming the field wouldn't be filtered to only meta elements.  Having a quick/easy option to write a script or base element and add it to the page would be great.

     Thanks again for time you put in... always a big help.

Re: Meta Tag Properties Testing this out it appears we have a bug with it. The way I explained it is how it is supposed to work but isn't how it is working.

We'll get it fixed. We might also just replace the entire thing with a textarea and let the page admin add whatever they want there. Tab would be renamed "Header Info" and the contents of the textarea would get added to the HEAD element of the page. Thoughts???

Thanks,
Joe

Re: Meta Tag Properties content property is the name of the property while content is the value of property. For instance, if you set content property to "foo" and content to "bar" the meta element would like this:

Event Calendar Pro New Version First, I should have bought the Pro Version long before now.

I am using the calendar as a delivery schedule for vehicles.
The free version worked great but I wanted my clients to have a little more control over the views available. When a delivery is scheduled, I would enter the appropriate information into the mp_CalendarEvents table from a custom control on a web page. This allowed me to pass and or enter all data related to the delivery.
Worked like a champ.
In this table, there is no field for a path to the details of the delivery.
It seems the free calendar used a details page and passed parameters from the database.

The Pro version has a field in the sts_CalendarEvents table "URL" and when I populate that with Title & Date, (same format as entering event normally), I get an error, page doesn't exist. If I enter an event with "create event" all works correctly.

Do I need to make an entry in another table somewhere to complete the link created?
*Note* In the calendar view, the event shows up. It is only when I click the details.

Thanks again

Greg

Re: Event Calendar Pro Hi,

I'm sorry for the inconvenience. The download zip does have a bit different structure than what was explained on the product page. I've updated the page to reflect the correct structure.

The zip file contains a folder for each supported database platforms. You need to copy the contents of one of these folders to the root of your website. So, for instance, if you're running MSSQL, you will copy the contents of the 'mssql' folder to the root of your website.

I hope this helps.

Thanks,
Joe

Event Calendar Pro I just purchased Event Calendar Pro (for Mojo 2.7)
I verified I am running version 2.7 in the system information in the admin. .
Downloaded the zip, eventcalendarpro-3500.zip

Extracted and placed in root of website, folder eventcalendar-3500

Ran setup but the pro version is not listed as part of the setup.
I also checked installed features in admin and it is not there.
I also checked the system log and no errors were generated.

I looked at the instructions on this page, https://www.mojoportal.com/event-calendar-pro-product under the System Requirements/Installation tab.

After purchasing Event Calendar Pro, download the .zip file to your local machine and using an FTP Client like FileZilla, copy the contents of the wwwroot folder into the root folder of your mojoPortal web site. Then visit http://yoursiteroot/Setup/Default.aspx to complete the installation of Event Calendar Pro.

There were no contents of wwwroot folder but I am assuming that with the new version, the folder name was used by the application.

Did I get the wrong version or did I miss something?

Thanks

Re: Please publish a new post in blog!!!! Hey Joe Davis,

'Blog post list' is a good feature in mojo 2.6 and this feature will better if we can select posts categories that we want to show in blog post list.

An example about this feature is when we want to create a news site, we can show every category in separate section in home page.

thanks.

Re: Please publish a new post in blog!!!! Hi,

Joe asks:    "Do you have any ideas for features you would like to see?"

1. Please use (show) a drop-down menu of all available built in CSS controls (ie.  "section-dark", "section-grey", "newsletter-cta", just to help us build a website without going to edit layout files).

2. Please include, in site admin, the option to create a back-up of the website database - saved to the folders at the website.  This is very important to assist recovery after a server crash.  Even if just the "HTML Content" tables are somehow backed up, that would be very helpful.  A web database "extract" seams to work well with mojo, thus the option to save this database file to web directory would be most welcome.

3. More control over the sliders (HTML or Flexi Slider - Sizes) would be most welcome.

4.  I find myself coding the number of Column, ie <div class="col-md-6"> content </div> inside mojo html and flexi sections in the source/edit area - it woiuld be great to be able to pick One, Two or Three columns (without coding I find the end user, website owner, does not understand).

I understand that these requests are easy to make, and difficult to do - but, I for one, would pay for a module that included more database backup features.

Many Thanks for all your hard work Mojo Team.

Ray

Re: Please publish a new post in blog!!!! Hi Sadegh,

My apologies for not writing lately. mojoPortal is growing and we have a lot of ideas for future features and feature enhancements.

What we've found since taking over the project is that we have a hard time doing the things that make money (building websites, providing hosting, developing custom features, etc...) and supporting our customer base doesn't leave us enough time to develop on mojoPortal as much as we would like. We've also found that there is a good deal of things in mojoPortal that we want to change to help streamline and consolidate the code. An example is the "access denied" redirection logic described here. There are other functions across the many features of mojoPortal that do the same thing but are implemented in different ways. This makes it difficult to update one function that appears in multiple places throughout the project. We're fixing that kind of stuff. It just takes time.

A new feature we will have in the next version of mojoPortal will be custom page settings. These settings will allow developers and skin designers to create page settings and then use them in their own custom features or in skins. An example of how this could be used in a skin is a setting for a background color or image. We've already written the bulk of this code but we're not sure how we want to implement the creation of the settings themselves. In other words, what mechanism do we want to give to the developers to create their settings. In mojoPortal, things like this are handled with XML files. A more modern approach would be to use Interfaces but we don't want to require skin developers to compile anything. So, once we've decided on a method for this, we'll get this important and very useful feature added.

Do you have any ideas for features you would like to see?

Thanks,
Joe

Re: Penetration Testing Tools Hi,

We don't have any recommendations but others might.

It's always good to do penetration testing but one must take a lot of care when reviewing and interpreting the results of the testing. Automated tools do not understand the purpose of the website they are scanning. A tool might claim there is a vulnerability because someone can post something it deems as "bad" to a page but you want people to be able to post that particular thing the tool thinks is "bad".

If you find a vulnerability that you are unsure about or you know is an issue, please use our contact form to let us know. This will give us time to issue a patch before the issue is made public and the real "bad guys" try to exploit it.

Thank you,
Joe

Penetration Testing Tools Hello everyone

We'd like to perform some automated penetration testing on our mojoPortal-based application (to test for some common vulnerabilities like SQL injection, cross site scripting, etc.).  I've come across skipfish (http://code.google.com/p/skipfish/) as a potential solution to this problem, but I was wondering what other tools people have found helpful. Free and low-cost solutions are preferred.

Thanks!

Re: 2FA Solutions Hi Isaac

Thanks for getting back to me.  The pointer to the User Sign Event Handler is really useful and will help if we have to code the solution - although we were hoping that wouldn't be necessary wink

Thanks again.

Re: 2FA Solutions Hi Neil,

I've not seen this done with mojoPortal so far, but it should be possible to use the User Sign In Event Handler to code your own solution. You may also find these two user.config keys to be helpful:

<add key="LoginPageRelativeUrl" value="/Secure/Login.aspx" />
<add key="PageToRedirectToAfterSignIn" value=""/>

Hope this helps!

2FA Solutions Has anyone successfully integrated a 2FA solution with a mojoPortal site to protect user login?  I'd be keen to hear of your experiences and the services you used.

We have a potential requirement to add 2FA to an exiting mP site (latest version) and I am investigation our options.

Many thanks in advance.

Would you be willing to rewrite our documentation on this?

Thanks,

Windows LiveWriter? Try Open LiveWriter Just a FYI Windows LiveWriter is no longer available from Microsoft. However a project called Open LiveWriter (http://openlivewriter.org/) is taking the place of LiveWriter so to speak. Open LiveWriter looks and feels just like the Microsoft version. I use it on my MJ sites blog modules, but haven't tried using the WordPress API to edit pages (yet). Just thought you might like to know.

If that doesn't work, please tell us the details about what you're doing. What files are you copying to where?

Re: User Profile customization. Hi,

I was able to copy what you posted into a profile config file and it worked fine. Are you sure you are editing the correct file? By default, the file is named mojoProfile.config and it is in the root of the mojoPortal installation. If you have set mojoProfileConfigFileName in your user.config or web.config, be sure to edit the file set with that setting.

Hope this helps,
Joe

User Profile customization. Hello everyone,

I am adding a custom field in user profile configuration file but it's not display on registration page. i.e

 <add name="TestName"
    type="System.String"
    allowMarkup="false"
    resourceFile="ProfileResource"
    labelResourceKey="PhoneNumber"
    lazyLoad="false"
    showOnRegistration="true"
    requiredForRegistration="false"
    maxLength="100"
    onlyAvailableForRoles=""
    onlyVisibleForRoles=""
    includeHelpLink="false"
    cssClass="widetextbox"
    />

I need a custom field here in profile page and i need to add it to a database that in mp_UserProperties or mp_Users.

I searched lot of forum and I tried it on my machine but it's not working for new field. if i use existing component then it's working but I need to rebuild the solution otherwise the it's not take effect of that.

Re: Mojo -The Future is bright Hi Eric,

I would also like to point out that you can preview the images by right clicking and select "View Image".  I realize it's not quite the same, but I at least wanted people to know it was there.

A majority of the new File Manager's functions are accessible by right clicking the items, so things like compressing, renaming, moving, and copying files are all done by the right click context menu.

Hope you enjoy the release!
Elijah

Re: Mojo -The Future is bright WOW, file manager looks awesome! It looks a lot easier to navigate huge sites with thousands of files and hundreds of pages like some of my sites have. Very slick and well done! That left admin nav bar is nice too, I'll have to play around more with this.

If I had to give room for improvement it would be nice to see image previews in the file manger so you can see what you are selecting (jpg, gif, png). It wouldn't have to be large, postage stamp size would do the trick. Even if the "icon" view showed actual file thumbs instead of the generic icon image that could work. Not critical, a little thing.

Can't wait!

Re: Mojo -The Future is bright Hi Eric,

Check out the demo site for the latest version of mojoPortal. We're hoping to release it by the end of the week.

The biggest change is the File Manager (docs here). There are some smaller, bug fix changes as well but the File Manager is the big thing. Also, We've pulled all non-english resource, help and message template files out of the core release and we're making them available in a new mojoPortal Language repo on github. That's going to make uploading mojoPortal using FTP a lot easier and faster because several hundred files are no longer included by default.

The demo site also has a new version of Form Wizard Pro which includes support for the HTML 5 Slider control and modern ui elements for managing the form itself. Some of the ui stuff is only supported if you have bootstrap included in your skin but degrades gracefully to basically what we had before the upgrade if you don't have bootstrap.

Thanks,
Joe

Re: Mojo -The Future is bright Any news on Mojo? It would be great to see some posts on the blog letting us know how things are going. The rumor of the new file manager was pretty exciting! I hope it comes to pass.

If there's anything your community can do to help let us know. We need to get the excitement up again. Some of us have hundreds of sites on Mojo and even just from a maintenance perspective would like to see Mojo stay alive. It's a fantastic CMS, very flexible!

In a first place thank you for this project. My brother use it for several year and now it's my turn. ;)

I try to upgrade our personal wiki from 2.3.9.6 to 2.4.1.0 but impossible to find original source code to identify custom components (on 2.3.9.6 release).

Do you think is possible to put this release back online ? It'll help me a lot :).

Anyway I thank you in advance for your support.

Newsletter not sending Joe,

I can send from both of the contact forms in my system. I can send to a preview person with no problem. I can not send to a single user (myself) who is subscribed.

Mail setting in user.config:

<add key="SMTPServer" value="mail.cruisefortroops.org" />
<add key="SMTPRequiresAuthentication" value="true" />
<add key="SMTPPort" value="10" />
<add key="SMTPUser" value="kprior@cruisefortroops.org" />
<add key="SMTPPassword" value="(removed)" />
<!-- leave this blank for ascii encoding -->
<add key="SmtpPreferredEncoding" value="" />
<!-- example for Russian encoding
<add key="SmtpPreferredEncoding" value="koi8-r" />
-->

I have no trouble sending to myself as a test from the newsletter, but it is not sending to me via sending to subscribers. (I am the only subscriber at this time.)

Saw a mention of a status bar in other posts not seeing that either. Just acts as if no action when clicking the button.

Sends fine as stated from BOTH of the message contact items I have on pages...

Baffled... any help would be great. Trying to get this set up for our Newsletter for sending to our people in our non-profit.

Re: Arvixe hosting plans from mojo link Hi,

When you will click on the affiliate link, it will redirect to the relevant page, and automatically it will be counted as an lead from the affiliate. So why you are worried about the commission and all.

Any ways quality matters and that you will get using mojo sites via arvixe.

thanks

Wordpress Migration to mojoPortal It appears that there have been discussions about wordpress migration to mojoPortal back in the 2010 threads. I am wondering if there has been progress made to this request?

I have a blog that is built on Wordpress and looking for a way to quickly migrate wordpress to the mojoportal - blog section. Any advice or directions on how to do this?

The transaction log for database 'xxx' is full due to 'CHECKPOINT'. Hello Joe,

It's my frist time to face this issue. I have a website www.starzuae.com where the other pages work except home page.

In addition to that whenever I try to log in it redirects me to the error page. So there's no way for me to check the system log.

you can see the error if you visit www.starzuae.com/setup/default.aspx

which says:-

The transaction log for database 'noosame_mojoportal771' is full due to 'CHECKPOINT'

What I am supposed to do in this situation?

Re: Googlebot cannot access CSS and JS files back in the old days it was recommended to block css and jss from robots.txt, but times have changed

if you look in the robots.txt file in the root of the site you will find things that block skin files and css and js

you should remove those items to solve the problem. we've also updated the robots.txt that will ship next time we update mojoportal so it won't block those things.

Hope that helps,

Joe

Googlebot cannot access CSS and JS files Hi Joe,

We hope all is well. Recently, we received a number of emails from Google regarding sites built on mojo.  It's simply: "Googlebot cannot access CSS and JS files on ... ." Apparently, this could affect search rankings for sites.

We ran some tests, and it seems Google is having a hangup with any CSS or JS created dynamically. Specifically, Webmaster Tools is pointing to the ScriptResource.axd file. We know that in the robots.txt file at the root level of our mojo installations, this file (as well as all those with an .axd extension) are disallowed.

We were hoping you could possibly explain why this is, and if there's any reason why we couldn't/shouldn't allow it.

Thanks. As always, we appreciate your time.
