HTML module start/stop

It would be handy to have a view start/stop date on the HTML module so content can be scheduled. Maybe it's for a notice on the website, a special event callout box, registration box, etc.

I'm not sure where or how technically. Maybe there's a new tab called "Content expiration" in the settings and there's a field for start and stop dates. If not within the date range the module only appears to logged in admins. Ideally next to the settings/edit links there would be a little hidden icon or notice so admins know the content is expired or is a scheduled module.

Just thinking out loud, not sure on exact implementation of course. But seems useful and something I get asked about from time to time for scheduling content.

We have a feature in the repo now where one can add to the <head> and right above </body> of all pages on a site. That could replace the current Google Analytics integration. We have separate inputs implemented for CMS Pages and Admin Pages so one could add their GA scripts without worrying about GA being used on admin pages.

New versions of google Analytics

Google has two and I think a third Analytics integration is here or on the way shortly. Mojo only supports the older style universal analytics at the moment and for never versions we put it in the skin (such as Tag Manager).

I wonder if a simple open text box is better and the user just pastes in the code Google provides? This wouldn't be depreciated as fast. This same code block could be used for other services as well for analytics tracking. It would need a little thought as to how it's placed, maybe with different location options like the Custom Javascript module does.

Not sure, just bringing it up for discussion.

Re: registration link could be shown as a BUTTON.

Hi Massi,

You would have to add it. What we're going to do for the next release is add SkinIDs to the links on the login page. You can go ahead and do this yourself and then use the theme.skin to add the bootstrap button classes.

In /Controls/LoginControl.ascx, go to the two <asp:HyperLink controls towards the bottom of the file and replace them with this:

<asp:HyperLink ID="lnkPasswordRecovery" runat="server" CssClass="lnkpasswordrecovery" SkinID="LoginControlPasswordRecoveryLink"/>
<asp:HyperLink ID="lnkRegisterExtraLink" runat="server" CssClass="lnkregister" SkinID="LoginControlRegisterLink"/>

Next, in your skin's theme.skin file, add the following.

<asp:HyperLink runat="server" SkinID="LoginControlPasswordRecoveryLink" CssClass="lnkpasswordrecovery"/>
<asp:HyperLink runat="server" SkinID="LoginControlRegisterLink" CssClass="lnkregister btn btn-warning"/>

You can change the btn-warning to btn-default, btn-primary, btn-danger, btn-info, or btn-success.

Hope this helps,

Hi Massi,

You can make this link a button with CSS. The CSS class is 'lnkregister'.

We'll create a theme.skin setting to allow you to change that CSS class to make it a bit easier.

1) you add a new shared files module to a page.

The Blog Post List is great, but I wonder if it could be possible to include more than one blog in the list, sorted on date of publishing?

To use this "old" feature, its more complicated to setup new content in the feed, and this new Blog Post List looks great.

User impersonation

For online stores it's common for an admin to be able to logon as one of their users to gain their identity (usually because the customer is making an order over the phone). We have a client who would like to do the same thing - to make bookings (using our custom booking module) on behalf of their members.

Would it be possible to have this as an Admin option in Mojoportal? It could take the form of an icon in the Administration panel. I'm imagining you would need to have a "master switch" in user.config enable it as there are a number of reasons why people would not want this option on certain sites!

Jamie's idea is one we've used in the past and it works well if the email server supports "plus addressing" and most do support it.

Can you shed some light on why your client wants to use the same email address for multiple user accounts? We might be able to help you come up with a better solution than using the same email address if we know what the actual business requirement is.

Re: Non-unique emails

I wasn't around at the very beginning of the mojoPortal project, but if I recall correctly, I think I saw that when it started email address was the only way to sign in. So if the core of the system is premised on email address being unique, that might be a tall order to change (database structures, etc.).

I know you said you proposed workarounds. Did you think of using a "+" in the email address to add uniqueness that's ignored by the email system, like sharedemail+Joe@gmail.com, sharedemail+Jamie@gmail.com? Those would both end up being routed to the sharedemail@gmail.com box, but should be seen as different in mojoPortal. If this sounds like it would work, you should definitely test it first to make sure it works before proposing it to the client.

I hope that helps,

Non-unique emails

Hi All, so pleased to see that there's a future for MojoPortal!

I have a customer with a few hundred users who login by userid rather than email address. In certain circumstances two or more logins need to share the same email address.

Given that email address is no longer the unique identifier if they login via userid I thought that this wouldn't be a problem so was disappointed to discover that it's prevented in code.

This really does pose a big problem for my client and they're not happy with the work-rounds I've proposed.

Is there any possibility of switching off the unique email validation when userid is used as the primary identifier?

Re: watermark on image gallery

Hi!

There are already a lot of image editing programs available that can do this, even for free, with various degrees of difficulty involved. Paint.NET and GIMP come to mind as two examples, and of course Photoshop for those who have it.

These programs give users far more control over their photographs than what we could reasonably build into mojoPortal, so my suggestion would be that it's better to use software intended for image editing to do this.

If you need a free way to add simple watermarks to your images, here's a tutorial for doing so with Paint.NET (which is free to download): http://www.wikihow.com/Add-a-Watermark-to-Images-in-Paint.Net

Thank you for your feedback.

I will use this viewing of images to select images in a imagegallery, with the mojoportal structure with thumbnails, webimage and fullsize image directories.

So one solution could be as soon as the pagemanager points to maindirectory for an image library, and find this 3 directories.

One option could then be to list out the thumbnails directory and an option to select the file from one of the 3 directories. Then it will be fast.

That would be a nice new feature in the filemanager.

Re: Image View in File Manager?

Hi,

Thank you for your feedback. We have thought about adding this kind of functionality but we're not sure if it will work out well because of the way images are stored in mojoPortal. All images are just files and mojoPortal does nothing to the images when they are uploaded, like create thumbnails and other sizes. So, when browsing a directory, each image would need to download for the browser to display it. If you open a folder with a lot of images in it, the file manager could slow down dramatically.

We haven't decided against doing this but we are trying to figure out how to do it in a way that doesn't slow the file manager down a lot.

WebStore was built to meet my needs and then I shared it with others but not much improved or changed over time and is no longer actively developed.

You could edit AdminOrderDetail.aspx and OrderDetail.aspx.

In the repeater where you see

<%# Eval("Name") %>

you could also add

<%# Eval("Quantity") %>

before or after that along with any label or formatting you want.

However that quantity comes from the ws_OrderOffer table and is the quantity of that specific offer in the order, so it won't in all cases correspond to the number of a specific product in an order. Offers may contain 1 or more of a specific product but it would still be 1 offer. So an offer that includes 5 t-shirts won't say 5, it will say 1 because that available quantity field is about how many of that offer are in the order.

If your offers generally have 1 qty of 1 product per offer then displaying that available Quantity field might do what you want. But it won't work correctly in every scenario which is why it was not included.

Mainly mojoPortal was designed with the idea to provide a business most of the functionality they would want for a web site.
More refined way to show blog posts.

Hi Joe,

I've been wondering since long days that, why haven't we formatted the URL in to get a more traditional way, where the user gets an option to list out his/her site's posts.

That is, in current scenario, you have developed the blog module to auto-suggest the URLs that goes after the site's root trailing slash.

If there could be an option somewhere in the post or in the "Administration" where something with a name "Blog Settings" or in the blog module's setting(after added to a page), like a check box to choose or a key in web.config to opt-in the traditional way like the below URL,

http://sitename.domain/blogs/user-name/category-name/M/dd/yyyy/post-name.aspx

By this way, we could make users (say, a community's website) to have their name shown up in the URL, by default, also something similar to the MSDN blogs.

Hope this suggestion would favor many people.

Thanks in Advance,

Thanks for the reply, Joe! I'm still having a bit of trouble...when I go to select which events to publish, the feed manager is only showing me the next 20 items in the main calendar to choose from, none of which are ones that I want to publish (most of my publishable events don't start until mid-March). I've played around with the configuration settings of the feed manager, but haven't found one that makes more than 20 items show up in the list. I also verified the calendar feed setting for how far out in the future it will publish events was set far enough out, but no joy. Is there another setting elsewhere that has an impact on this behavior?

Hello Shannon,

You can do this with the RSS Feed generated by the calendar.

Add the Feed Manager feature to a page and turn on the 'Selective Publishing' option. Next, add the RSS Feed url from calendar to the Feed Manager and view the page with the Feed Manager on it. Click the publishing link next to the Feed Manager title and select the items you want displayed.

You can also enable the 'Use Calendar View' option in the Feed Manager to show a calendar instead of a list.

Event Calendar Pro - Filtered List View

Hello, I'm using Event Calendar Pro and have a feature request. I would find the addition of support for filtered List Views to be very helpful. In other words, the ability to have a List View instance display only specific events from a master calendar. One possible way to implement this would be to allow for a group or event type ID to be entered in the event detail. Then, after picking a data source on the List View instance, have a multiselect list showing the available event types, or even just a text box to enter a delimited string of event types that should be shown.

As it stands right now, it looks like I need to set up a second full calendar instance, and re-enter all of my target events again so that they will display in both calendars.

If there is a way to accomplish what I am trying to do in the current version, I'd love to hear about it! I've only been using it for a day, so it is possible I missed something.

Thanks,

Thoughts/updates on adding subforums to the forums module?

Hi all,

Back when I was a Mojo Portal user (I'd go back to it for one of our sites if I could, but I'm overruled right now), I had asked about how to create subforums with the forums module. In other words, if my site was about technology, I could create a forum for operating system support, and then under that forum have subforums for stuff like Windows (subforums underneath there for the different versions), and then Linux as a top forum with subs for different distributions. I looked on the roadmap for this feature, and I didn't see it. Is there any thoughts of putting this feature in? Or should those who need it attempt to integrate something like Yet Another Forum's asp.net control instead? thanks.

If you move vms to Azure that will definitely cost. Recently I setup a vm from their gallery to try out VS 2014 and .NET vnext, then I turned off the vm and didn't get around to using it for a few weeks, then I got my bill and it was $38 after only a couple weeks with a turned off vm so I deleted it.

Re: Export / import complete sites so I can migrate to Azure

Hi Tony,

Many thanks for the generous beers! Much appreciated.

Basically you need to migrate the files and the database from your local vms to Azure websites.

You can use ftp to upload the files to Azure web sites, and you will need to use a tool like the Sql Azure Migration Wizard to migrate your database to Sql Azure.

Once the files and database are migrated you just change the connection string in the user.config file to point to the new sql azure database.

I'm not sure about running a multi site installation from a single Azure web site. In theory host name based multi sites should be possible as long as the dns /ip for both/each domains can point to the same Azure website installation. But I'm fairly certain the ip addresses are shared with other sites so there would need to be host name header in IIS in Azure for each host. There is probably a way to do that or to get a dedicated fixed ip address, but I can't say that I know off the top of my head.

Folder based multi sites should just work so long as the first site is a root site level site.

In general though, I think Azure hosting is relatively expensive vs traditional shared hosting. In some accounts they give you a free Azure web site but the Sql Azure is not free and tends to be expensive in my experience. If these are low traffic brochure type sites I would probably go with traditional shared hosting. You get more scalability with Azure but it does tend to cost more as a result and if you don't really need the scale then why pay for it.

With traditional hosting you can make a local backup of the db and ask the host to restore it and re-attach a sql user, or you can generate scripts that can be used to migrate both the structure and data into sql scripts that can be executed on the new db.

Hope that helps,
